Want to Play in the Reading Session at CMEA? Consider Joining the New CASTA Teacher Orchestra!

After listening to member feedback, the CASTA board has come up with a new format the new music reading session at CMEA 2018. We are inviting any interested Colorado string teachers (both currently teaching and retired) who are planning to be at CMEA to perform in the reading session orchestra. However, in an effort to provide the highest-quality performance possible, we are asking interested teachers to attend a rehearsal, during which we will preview the selections to be performed at CMEA. Please see the details below. If all goes well, we hope to expand the teacher orchestra in the future.

First Ever CASTA Teacher Orchestra Rehearsal:

Preparation for Reading Session at CMEA 2018

WHO? Any interested CASTA members. You don't even have to commit to performing all of the music. Perhaps you're not a native string player but would still like the challenge? Learn as much (or as little) of the music as you are comfortable with!

WHAT? Teachers who are interested in playing for the reading session at CMEA will get a chance to rehearse the music ahead of time.

WHEN? Saturday, January 13th, 10:00am-12:00pm

WHERE? Overland High School (12400 E. Jewell Ave., Aurora, CO 80012), in the instrumental music room. Contact Hannah Smith, OHS Orchestra Director and CASTA Webmaster, with any questions.

WHY? Because it's a great opportunity for teachers to make music together!

The 2018 CMEA conference will also include a second reading session featuring the compositions of our headliner, Dr. Andrew Dabczynski. This reading session will follow the "old" format where any interested members can bring an instrument and simply sight read during the conference.

International recording artist and Emmy award winning composer Mark Wood, an original member of the multiplatinum selling Trans-Siberian Orchestra and creator of the revolutionary Viper electric violin, is bringing his groundbreaking music education program Electrify Your Strings! (EYS) to HRHS Orchestras in Highlands Ranch, CO. This exciting event will transform the studnet musicians into a full-fledged Rock Orchestra! Mark will be performing with the students on his handcrafted 7-string fretted electric Viper violin as part of the 2017-2018 Electrify Your Strings! "No Limits Tour" on November 10, 2017 at Highlands Ranch High School Auditorium at 7:00pm. The audience will be entertained by Mark's original material, as well as his exciting arrangements of music by Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and more. The HRHS Orchestra students will perform in a live concert alongside Mark Wood, open to the public with all profits going to the school's music program.

When asked about Mark's upcoming visit, Orchestra Director Ryan Woodworth said, "We are so excited to bring a world renowned musician like Mark Wood to work with our students. This is such an awesome opportunity for the HRHS feeder students!"

The program – now in its 18th year – is a music education experience like no other. Wood and his team work directly with a school's orchestra director to tailor-design a rock orchestra makeover complete with a public performance at the end of the experience. EYS builds on the strong foundation in traditional music provided by music teachers; creating a partnership with educators that inspires students and boosts their self-esteem and motivation on stage and off. EYS has been featured on The Today Show, The CBS Evening News, and many more.

Mark Wood is the owner and operator of Wood Violins, the premier manufacture of electric orchestra string instruments worldwide. He studied under Maestro Leonard Bernstein, is a Juilliard-trained violinist and Emmy-winning composer. In addition to his solo career and his work with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Mark has worked with Celine Dion, Lenny Kravitz, Billy Joel and more.

To prepare for this concert, Mark will be teaching the students improvisation, composition, and personal expression on their violins, violas, cellos, and basses. Utilizing Mark's music arrangements that were sent to the district prior to this visit, the HRHS Orchestras will perform in a live concert alongside Mark Wood, open to the public with all profits going to the school music programs.
