October Newsletter

September was a busy month!

The Fayetteville clinic had such a wide range of participants! Riders ranged from 9 years old to 76 years old. Horses ranged from Pony Sebastian at 12hh to Percheron Patrick at 18.2hh.  Look how cute the pic is of them meeting!  I also had a mix of Western Dressage and Classical dressage riders.  The methods I teach truly are  applicable to any rider on any horse.  See below!!!

Big THANKS to Sara Lyter and Cerice Berndsen for hosting and organizing. Hulinndalur Farm is a beautiful setting, nestled into the Foothills near Tryon. The clinics at Sara's always stretch my teaching skills! I never know what I will encounter when I go there.   Now I just embrace the fact and hope I will come away a better teacher for the experience!

I believe we had 7 different breeds of horses this time, including this driving mini.

Magic the Mini

Can you tell which is the before and which is the after? I honestly had no idea when Beth asked if I thought I could help her.  She had worked with me 20 years ago when she was still riding and felt that what she was being told in the driving world wasn't working for her and Magic. In the top pic (which is the before), you can see the balance is off and how hard it was for Magic to pull the cart.  The cart also rode very roughly, with the shafts bouncing up and down, putting stress on Magic's back.  With Cerice's help, since she knows more about driving than I do, we co-taught this lesson.  I liken the before pic to riding in a chair seat, which is how most riders ride.  They are behind the horse, essentially applying the brakes and hindering the horse.  By changing how Beth sat in the cart, getting her "caught up", carrying her own weight by moving her feet back, adding in bearing down (using her core) and the push forward, look at the difference!  Makes for a lovely picture, Magic looks happier and the overall balance is now pleasing to the eye. The cart also rode smoothly, hardly making a sound!

Another note of importance is that Magic has a roaring problem.  On the first day I had to keep asking Beth to give him a rest because his breathing was so labored.  On the second day, which was actually hotter, he was able to go round and round easily!
