2017 Festival of Independent Theatres
“The Great Dictator” is an adaptation of the original film by Charles Chaplin. The fictional country of “Tomania” has fallen to the tyrant dictator Hynkel and his party, the double cross. A group of Jewish citizens led by a barber who is identical to the ruthless dictator, rebel and seek out peace. This adaptation has been staged to have each character represent antipodal traits using mask, mime, and an expressionist setting.

Actor 1 – Male
Hynkle, the ruthless dictator.
Barber, the caring Jewish barber.
Actor 2– Male
Garbitsh- The secretary of propaganda. Helps propagate destruction and hatred
Mr. Mann- Jewish neighbor and gossip. Spreads words of hope.

Field Marshal Herring- Head of Hynkle’s Army. A bumbling oaf.
Mr. Jaeckal, Wise Jewish elder. Helps give direction to residents in the ghetto

Hanna- Jewish woman, positive and headstrong. Love interest of the Barber
Secretary- Hynkle’s secretary. Mindlessly follows orders. Object of Hynkle’s lust
Agent 76- Secret agent. Ruthlessly kills thousands of rebellious workers.
Rebel Leader- Survivor of the slaughter. Leader of the rebellion against the double cross.

About the director-
Jaymes Gregory’s work has been praised both onstage and off across DFW. His work is known for blending physical comedy, gesture, and imagery to create his unique vision and style. Mr. Gregory has been seen as a director, lighting designer, set designer, and actor. He holds an M.A. in drama focusing in directing from Texas Woman’s University and is currently on faculty at Ursuline Academy of Dallas.
