Wheat growers voted to establish the California Wheat Commission in 1983, specifically to develop and maintain domestic and international markets for California wheat, and to support research that improves California wheat quality and marketability. In research, the Commission provides funding for the wheat breeding, and the statewide field trials program at the University of California, Davis. The Commission, operating under the California Food and Agriculture Code, is funded entirely by wheat growers and is guided by a board of twelve wheat farmers and two handlers – each with an alternate member – one public member, and one at-large member. |

California Wheat Collaborator 2016 |
|
|
California wheat collaborator program is held annually at UC Davis, at no cost to anyone that is invited to attend. During the program, you have the opportunity to hear from experts in various areas of the wheat industry. Mills are heavily involved as they serve on a discussion panel where you hear their thoughts on the quality of California wheat varieties developed by private and public breeders. CWC sends blind samples to all the mills for testing ahead of time, and they share their wheat quality results for the first time on the day of the meeting. |

Dr. Jorge Dubcovsky, UC Davis wheat breeder presented about his wheat breeding program efforts, and about new varieties that are being developed. Dr. Mark Lundy UC Davis Small Grains Specialist gave an update on his current efforts with the variety field trials, and about a new database he is working on to organize all the data in an easier, and more accessible form for the California industry. At this year's collaborator, we had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Ann Blechl, USDA Crop Improvement and Genetics Researcher. Dr. Blechl explained about gene editing, and the basics behind it, as well as where it can be applied to in the wheat industry. We also heard from Mr. John Renteria who presented about Miller Milling and their facility located in Fresno, CA. |

The CWC has been busy with visitors from overseas who want to learn more about California Wheat and its high-quality attributes. They were able to interact with the CWC staff and ask questions as they pertained to their particular countries. With the many challenges other wheat growing regions are encountering, they see California as an option from where they could source high quality wheat. |
