Taking a chance pays off for Fellows Former Kingston resident Lindsay Fellows is now a music supervisor and places songs in Major Motion Pictures and Television. His work includes the two Chronicles of Narnia Movies and The Imitation Game. By Peter Hendra, Kingston Whig-Standard - (excerpt) Thursday, October 13, 2016 4:07:50 EDT PM KINGSTON - In some ways, Lindsay Fellows can credit the city-crippling ice storm of 18 years ago for getting his start in the movie and music business. It was 1996, and Fellows, who succeeded Gord Downie as lead singer of local band The Filters, moved back to Kingston, where he had attended film school at Queen’s University and his family has roots. With a wife and two young daughters, he was at a crossroads. “I was disillusioned with the record business. I was working at RCA Records, I was bartending at night, and I was like, ‘I’ve got to get out of here.’ I had totally lost perspective,” recalled Fellows, who now works a music supervisor for films and will be one of the featured guest speakers at the Kingston Ontario Music Conference Oct. 22. “So I moved back to Kingston, and the biggest challenge I found was, ‘How am I going to make a living here? How are we going to survive?’ And I finally realized I should open my own business. I was going to buy the Mansion [bar] down at Johnson and Ontario [streets], then the ice storm hit and destroyed all the buildings down there. The building was ruined, and it’s the middle of February, and I was like, ‘What am I going to do now?’ ” Even though he was disillusioned, Fellows heard from a friend encouraging him to take a risk and come join him in a new business venture. “He got the funding to start Squint Entertainment with [the band] Sixpence None the Richer,” he recalled. “And he said, ‘You gotta come back out to LA.’ I said, ‘I can’t, I’m just getting settled out here.’ So I ended up doing it.” For those who might not remember, Sixpence None the Richer had a huge hit with the sugar-pop song Kiss Me. It was featured in the teen flick She’s All That, was a worldwide hit (it elbowed into the top song spot in 50 or so countries) and sold six million copies in all. Despite what some may say, the band was anything but an overnight success, said Fellows, who cottages in this area every summer and one of his two daughters currently attends Queen’s University. “It was just an amazing experience to be able to do that with just a couple of people in a garage,” he recalled. “We spent two and a half years working one single. That’s all we did was that one song, and we eventually got it, and took it to number 1.” He would then move into the movie business, focusing on marketing and music supervision with Anschutz Film Group subsidiaries Walden Media and Bristol Bay Productions. Now his name can be found in the end credits under “music supervisor” for films including the two Chronicles of Narnia movies, Journey to the Center of the Earth and, more recently, The Imitation Game and The Great Gilly Hopkins (for which his other daughter recorded a song). In that role, he has to bridge various people involved in the film. “Everybody’s got an opinion about music, whether you’re the director, the producer, the editor — the editor will pick the music 50 per cent of the time because he’s sitting with the director putting the cut together, so that guy’s got a lot of influence,” he said. “If you’ve got a a music editor, you’ve got his taste in music. If you have a big star like Matthew McConaughey, well, he’s interested in classic rock, so you’re going to be using classic rock in his movie. So it’s like you’re trying to get all of these people on the same track.” Fellows also serves as a consultant for companies such as Red Bull Media and Sorted Noise. | | MATTHEW WOODWARD - MUSICIAN/TEACHER Matthew has been playing and teaching guitar a long time. He began playing guitar professionally in nightclubs and bars before he had even finished high school. Since then he has never stopped playing in bands , he has been a full-time musician, teaching and playing guitar almost his entire life. Ask other teachers about the extent of their experience. A guitar will give back everything you put into it and more, but learning to play one does take some effort. It is NOT a quick-gratification thing. Matthew expects and gets results and will motivate you. . | | |
