Abadía Santa Maria de Retuerta was built for the Premonstratensian Order. Baroque-Romanesque in style, it has a classic Benedictine layout of church, cloister, refectory, chapterhouse and hospedería. It is one of only two such abbeys to have survived the destruction wrought by Napoleon and is a treasured Spanish cultural heritage site.

The recent abbey renovation respects the integrity of 1000 years of history. The original monastic uses of rooms were maintained, the Romanesque-Baroque architecture conserved, not altered. Opulent new furnishings, lighting and climate control make modern guests feel at home without compromise to the ancient.

PALENCIA

“unknown beauty”

CITY TOUR

Palencia lived its period of greatest splendour in the Middle Ages. During the reign of Alfonso VIII, the capital became a royal residence and in 1208 the first Spanish university was founded here. The city is watched over by the imposing sculpture of Cristo del Otero which, standing 20 metres tall, dominates the area from one of the hills surrounding the city.

Calle Mayor, Palencia's main thoroughfare, is the backbone of the city running north to south and boasts distinguished façades and few great shops. To one side of this major road stands the arcaded Main Square, the site of the façades of the City Hall, from the 19th century, and the church of San Francisco, a Franciscan building from the 13th century. The surrounding streets lead towards the “unknown beauty”, which is how Palencia's Cathedral (14th century) is known. The austerity of its Gothic façade conceals a wealth of art inside. Among its most prized treasures are a valuable plateresque reredos (16th century) and the crypt of San Antolín, with remains of the Romanesque and Visigothic temples which stood on the same spot centuries earlier. Last, inside the cloister, a visit can be made to the Cathedral Museum, which contains works by painters such as El Greco and Zurbarán.

Raid Aventura 4x4.

The northern Palencia is a rural area full of Romanesque, surprises and mysteries. Its nature is influenced by the Cantabrian mountain range, forming a karst relief of great interest. Hence the beauty of its landscape and geology, particularly in the area of "the nuts" which are like a little enchanted city; the magic of Peña Amaya, with its fort, abandoned village and splendid landscape from which it is contemplated. Historical events indicate that this is a "vortex of energy," we may find the reason on this occasion. The 4x4 routes also run through one of the most emblematic Palentino northern valleys, and inaccessible because of the sensitivity of the ecosystem, the Valle de Pineda. Located within the Natural Park of Fuentes Carrionas and through stunning scenery following the upward course of the river Carrión, with plenty of mud pools and various technical but not too spectacular for the beauty of the environment wading.

Gastronomy and surrounding area

Romanesque route of Palencia.

The excellent ingredients produced in the province, an itinerary which allows you to see the rich medieval heritage which arose in many cases around the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela. More than fifty buildings are preserved almost intact, outstanding among them is the monastery of Santa María, in Aguilar de Campoo. In the town of Carrión de los Condes you will find beautiful buildings such as the convent of Santa Clara (13th century) and the churches of Santa María del Camino and Santiago. Other Romanesque buildings which can be visited on this route are the church of San Martín(Frómista), the hermitage of San Pelayo (Perazancas), the church of Santa Eufemia (Olmos de Ojeda) or the monastery of Santa María de Mave, basis of Palencia's culinary tradition. Among the most emblematic dishes are lechazo asado (roast lamb) and pichón estofado (stewed pigeon).

The vegetables and garden products of the fertile fields are used to make tasty vegetable stews.

Other specialities of the region are pork products, Saldaña beans and sheep's cheese. To round a meal off, you could try the famous biscuits from Aguilar de Campoo, the sweets from Osorno or leche frita (made from milk, eggs, flour and sugar). Not forgetting to accompany any of these dishes with the excellent Designation of Origin Cigales wines.

BURGOS

World Heritage

CITY TOUR .

The architectural masterpiece of Burgos is the cathedral, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Erected on top a Romanesque temple, the cathedral was built following a Norman French Gothic model. The filigree work in the spires of the towers and in the exterior of the High Constable Chapel, are some of the masterpieces found in this cathedral. Such beauty and incredible genius lead to a long list of exceptional works of art in its interior, beautiful examples of civil architecture. The most remarkable house, however, is Casa del Cordón, where the Catholic Monarchs received Christopher Columbus

after he returned from his second trip to the New World.

To both ends of the historic quarter of Burgos you will find important buildings. In the west end lays the Royal Monastery of Huelgas Reales, with an impressive Gothic cloister and the famous Chapel of Saint James the Apostle.  East of the capital, in the Carthusian monastery of Miraflores, is an amazing polychromatic reredos, among other works of art. The legend says this reredos was plated with the first shipment of gold that arrived after the Discovery of America.

Bodegas Valduero in Ribera del Duero

Burgos

heartwarming experience

It was one of the first wineries to be incorporated into the D.O. Ribera del Duero and is situated in the village of Gumiel de Mercado, within the province of Burgos, an area where some of the best grapes in Ribera del Duero are grown.

We are also probably the highest winery in the region at 840m (2,750 ft).The red wines we make here are all 100% Tinto Fino and the grapes come from our own gobelet vineyards, planted using a 2,60m x 1,15m formation. Vineyard age ranges from 12 to over 40 years old and the vines are very low yielding. The root stock has graft cuttings from a vineyard of indigenous vines over 100 years old. The soil is mainly clay, with limestone and some sandy patches. We use traditional cultivation techniques and only natural organic fertilizer. We do not irrigate and our yields are between 1.500kg/ha and 4.700kg/ha. All our grapes are harvested by hand in small crates.
