In general, what is your athletic background? Played soccer for 13 years, avid downhill skier since middle school and raced on the SW Michigan Downhill Ski Team while in high school, avid waterskier since age of 5 (slalom for as long as I can remember), took up running in 2005 and went on to participate in 100+ events over the next several years from 5Ks to marathons with favorite distance being the half marathon. Even traveled multiple times to Utah (Salt Lake City) and Florida (Gasparilla in Tampa) to run in half marathons. Also competed in multisport events during this timeframe with my favorite being duathlons (run/bike/run) and also did a few indoor triathlons. Dabbled in CrossFit several years ago at 8th Day Gym and Crossfit AZO but had little time to train with all of the running and cycling I was doing.
How did you learn about CrossFit Kalamazoo? Did a search on the closest CrossFit box to our home and found CrossFit Kalamazoo. Emma and I were looking for a place to train so she could build strength in the off season for throwing discus during her senior year in high school.
How has CrossFit Kalamazoo changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? CrossFit has brought amazing and inspirational people into my life. I am so much stronger than I ever thought possible and doing movements that I could have never imagined being able to do. I was burned out (and frequently injured) from running all the time and needed something to satisfy my desire to stay active – I’m completely hooked on CrossFit this time around.
List short/long term goals you would like to accomplish through CrossFit Kalamazoo: Short term, I’d like to be able to perform pull ups (strict and kipping), double unders, handstand pushups (getting closer and slowly taking away pads). Long term, I’d like to be able to do all WODs Rx.
What do you like most about CrossFit Kalamazoo? The community of athletes and coaches who always encourage you to push beyond what you thought were your limits. I also enjoy varied workouts as I get bored easily.
What is your favorite CrossFit movement? Deadlifts, handstand holds
What is your least favorite CrossFit movement? Snatches, burpees
What are you currently doing to try to improve your diet? Portion control and to simply make better food choices
Favorite movie: The Blind Side
Favorite and/or current book: Favorite books are biographies and autobiographies including Off the Planet by Jerry Linenger and In a Single Bound by Sarah Reinertsen (fun fact: we had Sarah in for a Healthy Lifestyles speaking engagement at work and I had lunch with her and she joined me for a run around Reeds Lake in East GR.) Up next on my must read list, How I Became the Fittest Woman on Earth by Tia-Clair Toomey.
Favorite music genre/artist: Country, pop, 80’s rock
Achievements you’d like to highlight within your life: I am honored to be a wife and mother – very proud mom and WMU alumna of my third-generation Bronco! Greatest athletic achievements include: completing my first full marathon after becoming severely dehydrated at mile 16 – those last 10 miles were hell; completing an Olympic distance duathlon and placing 2nd overall female; and completing an indoor triathlon.
List a few things we don’t know about you: I had 6 wisdom teeth – yes, Emma beat me at this one too with her 7 wisdom teeth!!! I had ACL surgery my freshman year in high school after a crash downhill skiing at Timber Ridge. Love to travel – Utah is one of my favorite destinations for skiing and visiting national parks/monuments (Zion, Arches, Bryce Canyon to name a few). I have been to 36 of the 50 states
