Featured AthleteS

September 2018

We are so proud of all of our CFK Athletes! This month, we are very pleased to feature introduce  Stephanie and Emma Sabin!!

CFK Featured Athlete:

Stephanie Sabin

Age: 47

Occupation: Senior Compensation Analyst at Spectrum Health

Date Started CFK:  May 20, 2017

In general, what is your athletic background?  Played soccer for 13 years, avid downhill skier since middle school and raced on the SW Michigan Downhill Ski Team while in high school, avid waterskier since age of 5 (slalom for as long as I can remember), took up running in 2005 and went on to participate in 100+ events over the next several years from 5Ks to marathons with favorite distance being the half marathon. Even traveled multiple times to Utah (Salt Lake City) and Florida (Gasparilla in Tampa) to run in half marathons. Also competed in multisport events during this timeframe with my favorite being duathlons (run/bike/run) and also did a few indoor triathlons. Dabbled in CrossFit several years ago at 8th Day Gym and Crossfit AZO but had little time to train with all of the running and cycling I was doing.

How did you learn about CrossFit Kalamazoo? Did a search on the closest CrossFit box to our home and found CrossFit Kalamazoo. Emma and I were looking for a place to train so she could build strength in the off season for throwing discus during her senior year in high school.

How has CrossFit Kalamazoo changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? CrossFit has brought amazing and inspirational people into my life. I am so much stronger than I ever thought possible and doing movements that I could have never imagined being able to do. I was burned out (and frequently injured) from running all the time and needed something to satisfy my desire to stay active – I’m completely hooked on CrossFit this time around.

List short/long term goals you would like to accomplish through CrossFit Kalamazoo: Short term, I’d like to be able to perform pull ups (strict and kipping), double unders, handstand pushups (getting closer and slowly taking away pads). Long term, I’d like to be able to do all WODs Rx.

What do you like most about CrossFit Kalamazoo? The community of athletes and coaches who always encourage you to push beyond what you thought were your limits. I also enjoy varied workouts as I get bored easily.

What is your favorite CrossFit movement? Deadlifts, handstand holds

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement? Snatches, burpees

What are you currently doing to try to improve your diet? Portion control and to simply make better food choices

Favorite movie: The Blind Side

Favorite and/or current book: Favorite books are biographies and autobiographies including Off the Planet by Jerry Linenger and In a Single Bound by Sarah Reinertsen (fun fact: we had Sarah in for a Healthy Lifestyles speaking engagement at work and I had lunch with her and she joined me for a run around Reeds Lake in East GR.) Up next on my must read list, How I Became the Fittest Woman on Earth by Tia-Clair Toomey.

Favorite music genre/artist: Country, pop, 80’s rock

Achievements you’d like to highlight within your life:  I am honored to be a wife and mother – very proud mom and WMU alumna of my third-generation Bronco! Greatest athletic achievements include: completing my first full marathon after becoming severely dehydrated at mile 16 – those last 10 miles were hell; completing an Olympic distance duathlon and placing 2nd overall female; and completing an indoor triathlon.

List a few things we don’t know about you: I had 6 wisdom teeth – yes, Emma beat me at this one too with her 7 wisdom teeth!!! I had ACL surgery my freshman year in high school after a crash downhill skiing at Timber Ridge. Love to travel – Utah is one of my favorite destinations for skiing and visiting national parks/monuments (Zion, Arches, Bryce Canyon to name a few). I have been to 36 of the 50 states

In 10 words or less, what does CF mean to you?  Discovering the athlete within through varied physical (and mental) challenges.

How did you learn about CrossFit Kalamazoo? My mom found the closest CrossFit box to our house

How has CrossFit Kalamazoo changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? It has made me a healthier person and helped me make major improvements to my throwing because I had never lifted before coming to CrossFit.

List short/long term goals you would like to accomplish through CrossFit Kalamazoo:  Short term, I want to continue doing Rx for the workouts and try to lift heavier. Long term, I want to get a muscle up

What do you like most about CrossFit Kalamazoo? I like the atmosphere at CrossFit Kalamazoo. Everyone is always happy and encouraging everyone even though they are tired after a workout. The other athletes make me want to come back and better myself because they see potential in me that I don’t always see.

What is your favorite CrossFit movement? I like doing anything gymnastics related, mostly handstands and I like cleans.

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement? Snatches, everyone knows they make me grumpy.

What are you currently doing to try to improve your diet? Umm diet? I just try to eat healthy and I do anyway for the most part.

Favorite Movie: I don’t really have a favorite movie but I love watching The Office.

Favorite and/or current book: I don’t have a favorite book but one of my classes is requiring me to read American Gods right now.

Favorite music genre/artist: I like country and pop music and sometimes the music Coach Al plays.

Achievements you’d like to highlight within your life:  My greatest achievements in my life are becoming fourth in the state for weight throw in indoor track, qualifying for the outdoor state track and field meet and finishing 18th in the state in discus. I am also the first collegiate student athlete in my family.

List a few things we don’t know about you:

I had seven wisdom teeth. I actually never wanted to do track and refused to do it my freshman year of high school because it seemed like it wouldn’t be fun but then I tried it sophomore year and ended up loving it.

On-Ramp Classes - A 6 Week Fitness Journey!

Our On-Ramp class provides coaching in a smaller group setting and is mandatory for those who are new to CrossFit. This class is programmed to teach you the movements, techniques and lingo as we want to ensure you have a good foundation built before you jump into our regular WOD!

The On-Ramp classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday at 5pm, 6pm, 7pm or 8pm.

The On-Ramp Class is bundled with a monthly membership as we find this is ideal for those looking to start a new fitness journey. During this 6 week period, we will schedule 5-1 hour On-Ramp classes to be completed in the first 1-2 weeks.  The On-Ramp classes need to be completed before you join the regular WOD.  Upon On-Ramp completion, you advance to our regular WODs and will  have 4 weeks of unlimited visit membership.

This block of time allows your body  to adjust to a new fitness program and gives you time to get familiar with the moves. By the end of the 6 week period, will see how things start to fall together and you will start to see results of your hard work!   You will start too look forward to doing burpees and moving heavy stuff! :-) All while surrounded by an encouraging CFK Community cheering you on!

The On-Ramp classes are led by Coach Paige.  Please call  269-251-1677 for more information regarding cost of class and to schedule your start date!

Congratulations to our recent On-Ramp graduates:
