Have you heard it said that you have to love yourself, before someone else will love you? What kind of nonsense is that? There are a LOT of people out there who really, really struggle with loving themselves. And the overwhelming majority of those people are loved. Your subjective feelings of lovability have nothing to do with whether someone else can, or does, love you.

We have a tendency to become over identified with what we’re feeling. In the moment when we’re feeling sometime intense, it’s as if we BECOME that feeling. We forget that we are a person, EXPERIENCING a feeling— and that feelings pass.

Thinking in terms of patterns and habits really is the key to constructing a life we like and value. Patterns are built and maintained day by day. We have to figure out how to manage our behavior in little, manageable chunks every day— every hour, if necessary. Our job, day by day, is to figure out how to stay on course. Not how to solve the whole problem. Not how to move heaven and earth.

“TRYING TO OUTRUN YOUR SYMPTOMS WILL MAKE THEM WORSE.”

In order to manage symptoms, we have to accept that we’re experiencing them, be able to describe them, and investigate what triggers or exacerbates them. We have to look at them, in other words— even if we’re afraid.

You can feel like quitting and choose not to quit. You can doubt whether you can do something and try to do it anyway. You can question your worth and treat yourself as worthy anyway. Our feelings are not always accurate barometers of what we can do or what we deserve.
