Cub Scout Pack 375

2018 Opening Newsletter

Welcome to the Pack 375 2018 - 2019 Year!  We have a number of fun activities planned for the year and some changes that we think will help make things go more smoothly.  Please read below for some important information that will help us all get off to a great start to the year. We would like to apologize up front for the length of this newsletter, which is necessary due to all of the beginning of the year info. We do not anticipate future newsletters being nearly this long. (We noticed in our test e-mail that Gmail cropped the message. The last section of this e-mail is Contact Info. If you do not see that, please look for a link at the bottom to show the entire message.)

Why do news reporters hang out at the ice-cream shop?

Family Picnic - August 30th 2018

All Pack 375 families and any families interested in joining the Pack are invited to attend the 2018 Pack 375 Family Picnic, being held at Circleville Park starting at 5:30 PM.

For complete details and to sign up, please visit our SignUpGenius page.

Please sign up by Tuesday August 28th so that we know how much pizza to order.

Please invite any friends or families you know that would be interested in joining Pack 375

Family Scouting

Pack 375 is excited that, for the first time ever, we are able to accept girls into our program!  This is an exciting opportunity to involve the whole family in Scouting!

Please view the short video below to get a quick overview of how girls in Scouting will (or more accurately, will not) change the way our Pack operates.

For a more detailed look, please view BSA Today Episode 1.

Class B Shirts (T-Shirts)

Pack 375 will be offering Class B Shirts with the same imprint as last year.  However the shirt color this year will be safety orange! We decided to use this color because it would be easier to spot our Scouts on outings and at camp, it would be safer to wear when hiking, especially during hunting season, and it will be stand out more when Scouts wear them in public.

Also new this year, we will be offering Lady's style shirts in sizes S - XL. Please note that they will be a slightly different shade of orange (Sport Orange).

Pricing is still $13 for Youth Shirts & $15 for Adult.

We still have a few Navy Blue shirts available from last year (first come, first served).  Note that previous year's Class B shirts, and even Class B shirts from other Scout organizations and events are still acceptable to wear as a Class B uniform.

Fundraising

We know, nobody likes the "F" word, but it is a critical part to a successful Scouting program.  It was a difficult decision to raise dues this year, but it was necessary in order to keep the Pack "in the black."  Our goal is to provide additional opportunities to our Scouts and their families and hopefully lower dues for next year.  The only way we can do that though is through fundraising.

A fund raiser can be very educational for youth as well, teaching them values of hard work, economics, financial management, and budgeting.

Trail's End Popcorn

This will be our primary fundraising campaign for the year. Our goal is for each family to sell at least $250 or 15 units of popcorn this year.

Additional Incentives

In addition to the prizes offered through BSA, Pack 375 is offering the following additional incentives to Scouts:

$200:

Throw a pie in the Cubmaster's face

$400:

Special Edition Tye-Dye Pack 375 Class B shirt for Scout and Parent

Record at least 1 on-line sale:

Compass

Popcorn Dates

September 1st - Sale Begins

October 25th - Orders due by 5:00 PM

2nd Week of November - Popcorn will be distributed to Scouts

Popcorn Show & Sell

We are signed up for three Show & Sell events.  These are an easy way to boost your popcorn sales. Last year Scouts averaged $125 in sales per Show & Sell.

Please visit our Show & Sell sign-up page for complete details and dates.

We may have an opportunity to do a Show & Sell at the PSU Visitor's Center before either the Kent State (9/15) or Michigan (10/3) home games. Before committing, I want to see if there its interest from other families. Please e-mail Joe Zanghi ASAP if you are interested.

First Aid Kits

We still have some first aid kits left from last year. Any kits sold before October 25th will count toward the Additional Incentives outlined for popcorn sales.

We have:

Home Kits - $30 each

Outdoor Kits - $15 each

Sport Kits - $15 each

Auto Kits - $15 each

Pet Kits - $15 each

Other Fundraising

We are always looking for other fundraising opportunities, especially those that do not require door-to-door selling.

We have not had anyone volunteer to be our fundraising chair. Unfortunately that means that the task of organizing fundraising programs falls on the pack leadership.  We would love it if someone could volunteer for this position.

If you are unable to volunteer as our fundraising chair, but have a fundraising idea, perhaps you could organize a singe fundraising activity.  We will be grateful for any help we can get!

Final Thoughts

When selling door-to-door, a parent should always accompany the Scout(s)

We recommend collecting money at the time that you take the order.

Facebook

If you are on Facebook, please consider joining our our Cub Scout Pack 375, Stormstown, PA Families and Leaders Facebook group. This is a closed group, open only to families of Pack 375, so you will need to submit a request to join.

The Facebook group is a great way for us to share information quickly without having to send out e-mails constantly.  It is also a way for families to get messages out to the other families in the Pack quickly. For example, if you know of an event that would be enjoyed by other families in the Pack, you can share it in the Facebook group. Also, it is an easy way to share pictures of Scouting events with other families.

Please also be sure to "Like" our Cub Scout Pack 375, Halfmoon & Patton Township, PA Facebook page. This is a public page intended for recruiting and to raise community awareness of our Pack.

Scoutbook.com

Pack 375 is pleased to be rolling out Scoutbook.com to keep our Pack organized!  If you have not already, you will be receiving an invitation from Scoutbook.com to create an account.  Please keep an eye on your SPAM e-mail folder as these invitations often end up there.  It is important that at least one parent from each family creates a Scoutbook.com account.

Features & Benefits

  • Real-time advancement tracking. Parents can see their Scout's progress at any time and can mark off any requirements completed at home.
  • Instant access to current family contact information for leaders.
  • Up to date calendar and event information all in one place. Parents can "subscribe" to the Pack and Den calendars so that events are automatically added to your electronic calendar.
  • Dynamic e-mail lists available to leaders that can be used to communicate with parents.

What We Need From Parents

After you receive your invitation e-mail, please follow the link to create your Scoutbook.com account.

Once the account is created, please make sure that your contact information (cell phone, home phone, e-mail address,  and physical address) is correct.  This is critical since it will be the first place leaders look in the event of an emergency or they need to get a message out quickly.

Make sure you are "linked" to your Scout(s). You will know that they are linked if you can see them in the Administration section of My Dashboard.

Please note that some previous advancement was auto-populated when our account was created, but it is not completely accurate.  Don't worry!  We are really only concerned with advancement starting with this year going forward. In the future, we may try to go back and correct advancement information from previous years, but this will be a very time-consuming endeavor.

Please contact Joe Zanghi if you have any questions or concerns.

Volunteers

We are still looking for volunteers for the below positions.

Please contact Joe Zanghi if you are willing to volunteer or would like additional information regarding any of these positions.

  • Assistant Pack Committee Chair
  • Committee Secretary
  • Fundraising Chair
  • Public Relations Chair
  • Outings Chair
  • New Member Coordinator

Calendar

Here is a list of Pack 375 meetings and events for the coming year. Information for Den meetings and events will be coming from your Den Leaders. Note that the dates for our Pack meetings are below, however we have not confirmed the time of those meetings. That information will be shared with you soon.  As details for each of these activities are confirmed, they will be added to the calendar in Scoutbook.com and communicated in subsequent newsletters.
