Cool Things You Can Do with Pear Deck

Lesson of the Month

Sometimes the most effective method of instruction is working directly with students. This month,  students used our "You Can Book Us!" scheduler to make appointments with us to go over their research process. They brought a checklist to ensure all the steps outlined during class were completed thoroughly and effectively. Criteria included proper documentation of preliminary and revised research questions, initial search plans, work cited lists, and an annotated bibliography. Proper citation and organization skills were also reviewed and discussed. Click on the image to the left to see the checklist. Click on the button below to view the self-reflection survey we had them fill out.

Audiobook of the Month

Between the World and Me

"In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of 'race,' a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden?" -Goodreads

Video of the Month

Kingdom of Saturn

"In the anniversary year of the launch of NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, and featuring footage beamed back to Earth by infrared cameras, we uncover the secrets of Saturn’s moons and Cassini’s role in our search for extraterrestrial life. Now on a daring spiral orbit, the Cassini space craft will strike the planet, streaming data back home, before the searing heat tears her apart."

Food for Fines Week!

Twice a year we give students the opportunity to have their overdue fines waived. All they need to do is bring in a non-perishable food item and, no matter how high the fine is, it will be removed from our system. Items are donated to our Feeding Friendz food pantry. Please encourage your students to keep an eye out for announcements and posters from the library. This spring it will be held from April 23rd -27th. Click on the button below for a downloadable poster for your room!

"10 Years in the Making: I arrived at Columbine the first hour of the shooting, and spent ten years on this book. I was driven by two questions: why did they do it, and what became of the survivors? My surprise was that most of what we "know" about Columbine was wrong. It wasn't about jocks, Goths or the Trench Coat Mafia. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold didn't even envision a school shooting. They ridiculed school shooters as losers. Eric built his bombs to dwarf Oklahoma City. They planned to mow down survivors fleeing the the burning rubble for "fun." And it would end with more bombs. The key to comprehending Columbine is letting go of our concept of "the killers." Spend a few pages with Dylan and Eric, and you'll discover two starkly disparate boys. Their motives and personalities were poles apart. Eric Harris was monstrous; Dylan Klebold was loving but bitterly angry inside — a tender boy torn apart. Dylan was truly a revelation."

"The gripping international bestseller about motherhood gone awry. Eva never really wanted to be a mother - and certainly not the mother of the unlovable boy who murdered seven of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker, and a much-adored teacher who tried to befriend him, all two days before his sixteenth birthday. Now, two years later, it is time for her to come to terms with marriage, career, family, parenthood, and Kevin's horrific rampage in a series of startlingly direct correspondences with her estranged husband, Franklin. Uneasy with the sacrifices and social demotion of motherhood from the start, Eva fears that her alarming dislike for her own son may be responsible for driving him so nihilistically off the rails."
