There are some 500 million smallholder farms worldwide; more than 2 billion people depend on them for their livelihoods. These small farms produce about 80 per cent of the food consumed in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. They are mainly dependent on rain-fed agriculture or use unreliable electricity or diesel generators to pump water. In most cases, irrigation is done by flooding and fertilization manually. |
|
|
Existing solar pumping systems are expensive and not affordable for smallholder farmers. Most of them have an overall energy efficiency of 30-40%, which increases the number of panels needed to operate the system, thus increasing its cost. Agrosolar invented and developed a cost effective, affordable, piston-based solar-powered water pumping system with overall efficiency of 60-65%. The new pump and other elements such as a dedicated inverter/controller are specially designed to optimally couple varying sun energy to the pump. The technology can be combined with drip irrigation or other micro-irrigation systems to allow grid independent pumping, irrigating and fertilizing, resulting in dramatic improvements in yield; all this with an acceptable cost to the farmer. |
