ISSUE 4 JULY 2016

Check out what we have been up to this term!

Well the last few months have flown by and have once again be packed for action! The schools might be winding down for the summer but we have certainly remained in full swing!

Are you looking forward to Cirque du scouts Summer Camp as much as the leadership team are? We have many activities, challenges and adventures all ready and waiting to start on Friday no matter what the weather brings us!

If you havent already, visit our website HERE to view the Kit List.

*Don't forget your fancy dress for Sunday evening at the campfire!*

Following on from our very successful and action packed day at Woodlands, seeing Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Young Leaders alike sliding down water slides, shooting plastic balls at each, running around a giant soft play or racing down death slides! The venue was perfect for all ages and made sure everyone was tired out by the end of the day! A massive thank you to Steve for arranging the coach to take us there and bring us home and to all the Leaders and Young Leaders who gave up their day to make it possible!

Next up our annual trip to Weston! Only I could have had absolutely no idea that the date we picked coincided with the Weston Airshow! But it was an amazing experience to get to watch planes overhead all day while children completely activities and games in teams throughout the day! A personal highlight was getting to watch the magnificent red arrows preform right above our heads! The day including fish and chips and was finished off with a ice cream before coming home. The day including sandcastle building, French bowls, flying stunt kites, playing rounders and cricket and taking part in the 82nd Weston Treasure hunt. A massive to Angela, Shaun and Neil for driving the minibus for us! The children we as always an absolute delight to take anywhere and behaved impecibly really being advocates for not just the group, but the Scouting movement!

To end off our year, we held our annual parents and friends evening (AGM) which saw a record breaking turn out of families to help us celebrate our successful year! Badges were presented across all sections and videos and photos showed the best of what we offer our young people and all the things the children, and group have achieved over the year! A few special awards were also present including 2 brand new awards- an adult special recognition award for Neil Hewlett for longstanding and outstanding dedication to the group and also the Bradley Cox Cup going to a well deserved Ellen Jenkins! A enormous thank you to all who came and supported the event, and to our 2 new parents who joined our Committee! ‪#‎82ndfamily‬

On Sunday the 3rd of July we held our Summer community Funday at our scout hut. This event was open to all members of our group as well as an open invitation to all members of our local community including local schools, churches, residential homes and neighbours.

We were lucky enough that the sun shone throughout the day encouraging more visitors to take part in many activities and visit our stalls, making the event such a success.

The Funday included stalls selling ice cream, tuckshop, candyfloss, cream teas and a bar providing a selection of soft drinks. Visitors were able to have their face painted, get a glitter tattoo, and have a bounce on the bouncy castle (with thanks to Chew Valley Inflatables), as well as taking a chance to win one of many raffle prizes (many thanks to everyone who donated a raffle prize). Visitors had the chance to create a keepsake of the day by popping into the ‘Ultimate Party Booth’ and taking away a photograph(Thanks to Ultimate Party Booths).

Traditional ‘fete’ style games were part of the day and included coconut shy, hook a duck, open the door, hoop la, splat the rat and wacky wire with a selection of prizes available.

Thanks to Reptilians South West visitors also had the chance to get up close and personal with a few cold blooded creatures including snakes, lizards and chameleons.

The community Funday was a huge success for our scout group, we saw lots of familiar faces as well as seeing many new faces at the event. However, the most popular of our visitors were Peppa Pig and Stuart the minion who had time to stop and pose for pictures with members of the community that attended the event.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all people involved in making our community Funday a huge success. Those who helped run stalls on the day, helped with planning and setting up, those who donated any items towards our raffle, prizes and bric – a – brac, and those who leant us equipment to run the stalls.

We would like to thank everyone who attended our Funday and supported our scout group. We hope to see you all again next year!

Finally the end of the term saw all sections completing "jump rope for heart". The idea was inspired by a former Scout Bradley Cox, who taught us a lot about "invisible disabilities". Bradley never let anything hold him back, despite having such a complex heart condition and therefore that was the cause we despite to support as part of the community impact initiative!

The 82nd leadership team are astonished by everyone that took part in our skipathon on Thursday 21st July and surpassed our groups target of 6,000 jumps by 7,887 extra jumps. With everyones donation of a £1 to participate and those children that went the extra mile to be sposored for the event; we raised £200 for the British Heart Foundation which is a charity close to the Scout Groups heart.

All of this is part of a project all 3 sections have participated in called #amillionhands over the last academic year which is ran by the Scout Association. #amillionhands is a Community Impact campaign which reflects our ambition by 2018 to mobilise half a million people in support of four social issues chosen by young people.
