New Faces at SewGreen@ROC this Summer! |
Meet our new summer intern! "My name is Kentrayl. I will be attending my junior year of high school at School of the Arts. This summer I decided to sign up for Rochester's Summer of Opportunities for Youth, and they assigned me to SewGreen@Rochester where I met Georgia. Everyday I learn something new and do something interesting. I have grown to enjoy the work, people, and all that comes with being here at SewGreen@ROC. Next time you come in and use a scrappy bag, ask if it was made by me. It's one of my favorite things to do!" |

Julia is a rising senior at Pittsford-Sutherland High School. She upcycles adult clothing into clothes for children. She donates her work to children in need in Guatemala, Haiti, and right here in our city, Rochester, NY! This summer you can find her at SewGreen@Rochester helping with Kids Sew Together. In the fall of 2017, Julia hopes to major in environmental policy. We wish her the best in her senior year of high school and at whichever university is fortunate enough to snag her! |
Kiara lives just around the corner from our shop. She is a rising sophomore at Finger Lakes Community College, and is studying to be a nurse. Kiara tells us she is learning something new every day at our shop, and that she loves meeting everyone who comes through our door. She joins Kentrayl, Bayley and Julia every Tuesday and Wednesday on the sidewalk out front for Kids Sew Together. Kiara plans to make a skirt for herself with her newly-acquired sewing skills before she returns to school this fall. We will be happy to help her achieve that goal! |
Bayley will be a junior at Pittsford-Mendon High School this fall. When looking for a summer community service opportunity, she found our shop. She loves the diversity she finds in the 19th Ward. Bayley enjoys seeing people from different cultures come together, and she particularly thrives on facillitating communication across cultural boundaries. No surprise here: She hopes to major in International Business in college. Bayley's favorite activity at the shop so far? Working with the knitting spools Kentrayl and Kiara made from old wooden thread spools! |

Kids Sew Together Has Begun! |
Our first two weeks of Kids Sew Together have been great fun! The heat has been a challenge and on at least one day we had more volunteers than kids. On another we moved our craft table and supplies to the Arnett Library, but Bayley, Julia, Kiara and Kentrayl each bring good humor to the work of learning a new craft skill and then teaching it to whomever stops by. They have not wilted in the heat yet! We have changed the time and will be meeting Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. out on our sidewalk instead of the original 2 to 4 p.m. time. Ages 5 & up! Join us! |
