October 2015

Welcome!

With the start of October came a group of new SCSquashers. Our team has now tripled in size, adding 10 new fifth graders, 7 new sixth graders and an entirely new fourth grade class of 10 students. We are now up to 40 students total, with an goal of 45 student-athletes by the end of 2015!

Be sure to take a look at what we have been up to here at Steel City Squash this month and all the events and activities that are coming soon! We would love for you to check out our new updated website to learn more about our program and our students!

Time for Try-Outs!

NEW STUDENT-ATHLETES ARE HERE

On October 2nd, a new group of fourth, fifth and sixth grade students began an 8 week-long tryout to become part of the SCS Family and Program. After the tryout period is complete, students will be asked to become members if they have shown that they are committed to furthering their education, learning about their community, and working hard on the courts.

TEAM BONDING ACTIVITIES

In Semptember we had a team bonding event where SCSquashers were split into teams and competed in Minute-to-Win It Games, as well as participating in the Marshmallow Challenge. This bonding event was used to teach the importance of group collaboration, listening to the ideas of others, positive sportsmanship, and to better the overall team enviornment by allowing our students (as well as staff and volunteers) to interact and work together outside of their typical enviorments. WOMEN'S SQUASH WEEK

This year's Women's Squash Week events were hosted by the Pittsburgh Golf Club and Chatham University on September 25th and 26th. Our six grade girls attended the event where they were able to meet other women squashers in Pittsburgh and create new connections.

BUCKNELL VS DENISON MEN'S SQUASH MATCH

On Saturday, October 17th, our 5th and 6th grade boys headed to the Rivers Club to watch the Denison Men's Squash Team take on the Bucknell Bisons at 11am. SCSquashers had a chance to meet, watch and cheer on former Urban Squasher of Access Youth Academy in San Diego, Kevin Chung, who is now playing in Denison's top 9. The boys were excited to be able to congratulate Kevin on his win over Bucknell, sharing high-fives and positive words with Kevin as he stepped off court.

On September 26th, SCS student-athletes volunteered at the American Diabetes Association Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes. Community Engagement

THEATRE TRIP

In the spirit of the holiday, our 6th grade SCSquashers will be making a trip to the Kelly Strayhorn Theatre for their annual Halloween activity day, Halloween Mayhem.  The event will take place on Saturday, October, 24th. Students will have the opportunity to view performances of live music, dance and other spooky shows, as well as enjoy giveaways and hands-on activities. This will be a great chance for our students to interact with their peers, while also bonding as a group.

HALLOWEEN MARCH

As a fun Halloween activity and a way to promote our program within the Pittsburgh community, SCSquashers will be marching in the 2015 Pumpkin Patch Parade in Pittsburgh's Mt. Lebanon, on Halloween Morning. Following the parade, student-athletes will have the opportunity to go trick-or-treating at the local businesses in the area. This in itself will be a special 'treat' for our SCSquashers, as going out on Halloween night is not a tradition in all communitities within the Hill District.
