Ready, set, network!  Preparing to network at an interpreter event.

Many colleagues south of the border attended the 58th annual ATA conference in Washington DC this past week.  In preparation for the event, Interpreter Education Online shared a fun piece to get everyone ready to get the most out of the networking possibilities at the event.

We are sharing it here as we look ahead to the networking at the upcoming OCCI Annual Congress later this month.  Click here to read "Types of People You’ll Meet at Interpreters & Translators Conferences and How to Network with Them".

CBC's Dr. Brian Goldman continues the conversation about the need for language support in Canadian health care

In last week's OCCI News, we shared a link to a CMAJ editorial, "Healthy Interpretation". In the days following the release of the editorial, Dr. Brian Goldman, host of CBC's "White Coat, Black Art" published a blog to continue the conversation about the need for language support.  Click here to read his blog "Let's Talk:  Why Canadians need health care in their own language"

Mothertongue UK releases the 2nd anthology of interpreters' stories

On October 5th, "In More Words", an anthology of international interpreters' stories, was launched and shared with the message quoted below.  Following the message are links to the first and most recent anthology.  We applaud the important work that Mothertongue UK has done to support interpreters and we will look forward to following Pasalo as they continue in those efforts.

"Mothertongue multi-ethnic counselling service was awarded funding from the Big Lottery, to give an opportunity to those who voice other peoples' sensitive and distressing material, to tell their own stories in their own voices. Clients referred to in the stories, are all composite or fictionalised versions of clients to preserve their anonymity.
In 2015 we published our first anthology of interpreters’ stories: In Other Words. Our second anthology, In More Words, includes voices and stories from international interpreters. The interpreters, who have chosen to write in English, are from Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, India, Iran, Kenya, Nepal, Poland, Turkey, the UK, and the USA.  In More Words allows us to glimpse into their worlds.
In More Words is a fascinating collection of honest, beautiful stories.

Mothertongue multi-ethnic counselling service
www.mothertongue.org.uk   has been running a dedicated Mental Health Interpreting Service, since 2009, as well as their clinical psychotherapy service. Mothertongue will be closing next year after nearly 2 decades of service. The knowledge and experience they have gained over that time will be continued and passed on by a small NGO called Pasalo: www.pasaloproject.org"
