As the 2016 Season kicks off, Bluesails Sportfishing is re-committing our efforts toward sustainable sportfishing, sailfish conservation & raising awareness about the importance of catch & release.
Our take on "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" is "Reel, Revive, Release" & in-water releases will always be encouraged.
Without a doubt, hauling a Sailfish onboard harms the fish, rubbing off its layer of protective slime (a mucoprotein secreted to provide a barrier against bacteria, parasites & fungal infections), & causing damage to its internal organs & skeletal structure. These damaging effects have been studied & well-documented over the years, & not many anglers are aware that Costa Rica–a major Sailfishing hotspot–passed a law back in December 2008, making it illegal to remove Sailfish from the water. The fine for violating this law is 2 million colones or about US$4,000.
For those anglers interested in finding out more information about the damaging effects of hauling Sailfish out of the water, we've included links to 2 excellent articles, & our Captain's Blog # 4 where Capt. Mike Tan explains the importance of responsible sportfishing.

Catch & release, & fish conservation will be a recurring consistent theme for Bluesails Sportfishing in 2016, & something we will be emphasising often, along with our new motto, "Reel, Revive, Release" to ensure that our seas are always swimming with Sailies!
