Mind your mantras. Those turns of phrase you repeat to yourself, every day, again and again. The things you say to yourself, over and over again, become your programming. You may not even be aware that you're doing it.

Recovery from trauma, recovery from addiction, recovery from depression...what matters to these projects isn't that your recovery is beautiful or elegant or picturesque. Trust me: most peoples' isn't.

Watch out for people who try to control you via their judgment and condescension. These people might act as if they're trying to "help" you live a better life.

Taking time and space for yourself is a stop gap. It's not a reliable strategy. Absolutely take time and space when you need to. A lot of people very much need alone time to recharge.

“NO, YOU DON’T NEED TO BE AN ADDICT TO RELAPSE.”

Every time we take a self-sabotaging, self-defeating step backwards, it’s a form of relapse— and we need to understand exactly what that means.

But truly: get in the habit of taking a step back and taking a deep breath. Perspective is crucial on this journey. As is--I dare say--humor. You can take your mission and values seriously, while not taking yourself or your life too seriously. Not everything in life is "Braveheart" or "Fight Club."

There ARE teachers and mentors and guides out there who can share what they've learned, and who can get you thinking about your own patterns. But in the end, you're going to be the architect of your own recovery. Nobody else CAN be, even if they wanted to (or you wanted them to).

Be on the lookout for people in your life who are just in love with drama or distress. There are absolutely people out there who don't seem to be comfortable unless they're in the middle of an emotional or situational hurricane. They may not MEAN to be magnets for tumult--but in practical terms, that's what they seem to be.
