Happy Spring, ASTA Members! This is a busy time of year for us as we finish the school year full of lessons, recitals, concerts, festival performances, exams, juries... so much is happening! Take some time for yourself and your family! Thank you for everything that you do for string education in our beautiful state!

Highlights from the 2018 National Conference in Atlanta, GA

Colorado was well-represented at the 2018 National ASTA Conference. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a memorable, enriching experience! Some highlights include:

Save the Date for the 2019 National ASTA Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico & Consider Presenting a Session or Bringing Your Orchestra

The 2019 National ASTA Conference will be close to home in Alburquerque, New Mexico. Please save the dates: March 6-9, 2019. We'd love to see a large contingent from Colorado there. We'd also encourage you to submit a session proposal and/or apply for your orchestra to be a part of the 2019 National Orchestra Festival. Conference session proposal information can be accessed here, and the application for the National Orchestra Festival can be accessed here. 

Highlights from Large Group Festival

Here are some photo highlights from the 2018 Colorado ASTA Large Group Orchestra Festival. 33 orchestras from across the state performed at our two-day festival on April 3rd (at Fort Collins High School) and April 4th (at Gateway High School). The judges were Gal Faganel, Cameron Law, and Ellen Ravnan, and the clinicians were Susan Chandler of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Rebecca Roesler of Brigham Young University-Idaho. Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make the event possible. We are looking forward to bringing you information about the 2019 event soon!

Student Summer Scholarship Applications Due April 13th 

Applications for 2018 student summer camp scholarship are due April 13th. This is a great opportunity for dedicated students to get financial assistance for music-related summer camps and workshops. Please visit the Colorado ASTA website for more information.

Register Now for the 2018 Colorado ASTA Summer Conference

The 2018 Colorado ASTA Summer Conference will be held Monday, July 16th and Tuesday, July 17th at The Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver. We are looking forward to planning an exciting conference. The registration form and session proposal form are now available. Session proposals are due June 1st, and early registration for the conference ends July 1st. Please consider submitting a proposal--everyone has something unique and beneficial to share! Additional details (graduate credit, wifi access, parking, etc.) will be made available soon.

TetraCello and MSU Denver Recently Hosted First Annual Colorado Cello Summit

On March 24th, 2018, Denver-based cello quartet, TetraCello, and Metropolitan State University of Denver hosted the first annual Colorado Cello Summit. Designed to grow the cello community in the Colorado area, this year’s summit brought together roughly 40 cellists. The free event included presentations from Dr. Charles Lee on preparing for auditions, Richard Slavich on the Bach Cello Suites, and Doug Moore on his cello ensemble arrangements, as well as an improvisation workshop led by Gil Selinger. The day concluded with a cello ensemble reading with everybody in attendance led by conductor David Rutherford. Kansas ASTA to Host Two-Day Workshop with Dr. Christopher Selby in June

The Kansas Chapter of ASTA is hosting Dr. Chistopher Selby (author of the Habits of a Successful String Musician series) on Jnue 22, and 23, 2018 for a two day workshop at Wichita State University in Wichita, KS. Kansas ASTA has graciously extended the invitation for Colorado members to attend. Please see the registration form for additional information. 

Darol Anger to Perform in Colorado Today and Tomorrow

Darol Anger (of the Turtle Island String Quartet) is coming to Colorado! He will be performing with his band, Mr. Sun, on April 6th (in Lyons) and April 7th (in Denver). Details about the Lyons event (at the Wildwood Pavilion) can be accessed here, and details about the Denver event (at Swallow Hill) can be accessed here. 

Cellist Lynn Harrell to Visit Colorado Next Week

Thursday April 12th, 7-9 pm, free master class with Lynn Harrell, Thornton Arts & Culture Center, Thornton (register, limit of 2 per registration, bhamviola@comcast.net)


Saturday April 14th, 7:30 pm,  Bethany Lutheran Church, chamber works of Schubert and Brahms, solo Bach cello suite, with Colorado Chamber Players.

Greater Boulder Youth Orchestra to Host Interactive Fundraisers Next Week

On April 14, a composer will work with Greater Boulder Youth Orchestra (GBYO) students and audience members to create a new piece of music on the spot! This new event we’re calling SCORE: a unique and interactive fundraiser. 

 

Delight in a night out, support talented young musicians, learn about GBYO, enjoy wine and appetizers by Guillaume's European Catering, and create a brand new piece of music with composer Andy Reiner!

 

•  Saturday April 14, 5pm

•  At the Center for Musical Arts

•  $20 ticket in advance, $25 at the door
