ACTION ALERT

Friday, October 13, 10am

Dear MASCP Friends,

Please attend the Wisconsin Assembly Labor Committee’s public hearing on the Mining Give-Away Bill this Friday October 13 at 10 a.m. in the State Capitol, Room 412 East

Ten days ago, MASCP and US El Salvador sister cities hosted Water is Life: Stories of Grassroots Environmental Activism in El Salvador and the United States

Four years ago, MASCP and its parent organization, US El Salvador Sister Cities and Allies in the anti -mining struggle hosted this event from which the above poster was created. Mining, Jobs, and the Environment: A community conversation on the fight against destructive mining at home and abroad.

Right now we have been called by our Allies to take action and attend this hearing  about this very important environmental struggle here in Wisconsin.  We need to show our opposition to the proposed Mining Give-Away bill!

“Mining Give-Away Bill”  (From Sierra Club)

There have been amendments proposed to the bill but they do nothing to fix its serious problems. The Mining Give-Away Bill is a threat to our environment. The bill still:

• Removes our common sense “Prove it First” requirement that a mine company demonstrate that their mine will not pollute our water before it can be built,
• Would restrict the public’s voice in the mining permitting process,
• Reduces Wisconsin taxpayers financial protections from mine pollution,
• Undermines Wisconsin’s wetland protections, and
• Will increase pollution which will threaten public health and our agriculture and tourism economies.

The Sierra Club and more than 50 state and regional environmental oppose this bill and conservation groups including the Nature Conservancy, Trout Unlimited, and Wisconsin Association of Lakes. In addition, the Mayors of Wausau, Portage, and Wisconsin Rapids are opposed to the bill. RSVP here if you can attend. We’ll send you talking points and other information
