CFK Featured Athlete: Amy Fritz

We are so proud of all of our CFK Athletes! This month, we are very pleased to feature and introduce Amy!

Age: 31

Occupation: Nurse and Student at

U of M for the Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner

Date Started CFK:  July 3, 2016

In general, what is your athletic background?

Always been somewhat athletic; played varsity softball and volleyball in HS. In college I participated in group fitness classes and spin. I have been a spinning instructor since 2010.

How did you learn about CrossFit Kalamazoo:

I was interested in cross training after doing cycling for so long and suffering injuries. My cousin had been doing CrossFit for over a year with great results and had nothing but good things to say about it. Did a quick google search and voila! CrossFit Kalamazoo!

How has CrossFit Kalamazoo changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness?

I can say truly that I have never been a weight lifter, never felt that I had “strength”, sure I was in shape cardiovascular wise, but felt weak and “soft” everywhere. I would workout 3-4 days per week at what I thought was high intensity. Now I look forward to my 4:55 alarm so I can go and push myself to the limits. I am now at the gym 4 days per week and the 5th day and 6th day I still continue to teach spinning classes. I feel stronger and more toned than I have ever felt. I am the exact same weight but down two dress sizes since starting CrossFit Kalamazoo.

List short/long term goals you would like to accomplish through CrossFit Kalamazoo:

I would love to get consistent with my kipping pull ups and be able to do at 10 in a row by Christmas as well as one strict pull up.

What do you like most about CrossFit Kalamazoo?

My favorite part is the sense of community and accountability. That support is what gets me through the grueling workouts and past my morning whining.

What is your favorite CrossFit movement?

Bulgarian lunges and overhead squats

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement ?

Wall balls…..WALL BALLS….hear that Tim? WALL BALLS

What are you currently doing to try to improve your diet?

I have done multiple Whole30’s with great results, I fall quite short pursuing that when I am “off” a whole30 but I do try to stay on paleo guidelines with the occasional fermented fruit juice  :-)

Favorite movie: Pride and Prejudice, Gone with the Wind, Anne of Green Gables all equally because it doesn’t get more girly and dorky than that.

Favorite and/or current book: I read a lot of “housewife porn” as my husband calls it, but love a good fantasy/romance/historical fiction because again…I am that cool. The Tairen Soul series basically rocks my world.

Favorite music genre/artist:

Pop/Country/folk/new age/instrumental. Basically everything except Rap. Oh and Chris Stapleton is my boyfriend...

Achievements you’d like to highlight within your life:

I am very proud of myself academically for pursuing a graduate degree at this point in my life with two small children, a husband, fur baby, and a job. I am feel that I am setting a good example via my dedication to fitness for my children and those around me. Lastly, most recently I’d like to highlight my completion of the CrossFit Open this past spring. That was a situation where I was completely out of my comfort zone and pushed myself further than I ever thought possible with the help of my CrossFit Kalamazoo family.

List a few things we don’t know about you:

I have only ever been to one concert in my whole life….Savage Garden…yup with my parents. I am ¼ documented Chippewa. I played competitive travel floor hockey until I was 16 years old. I can whistle with my hands and it sounds legit AF.

In 10 words or less, what does CF mean to you?

The most challenging and rewarding physical activity…EVER!
