Pushes Toward His Goal of Universal Child Care Through Open Access

Since Community Ally Robert C. White, Jr. began his term as an D.C. At-Large Councilmember, he has been focusing on bridging the gaps for residents who are being left behind. Much of our economic inequality results from an educational disparity that has plagued our city for decades. Robert C. White, Jr. hope to reverse this trend starting with early childhood development, adult education, and special education.

On March 1, He released his Transition Report to detail his legislative agenda. Days later, he began working to unravel the early childhood development crisis in the District. As a new father, he had been astounded by how much his infant daughter, Madison, learns each day. Watching her grow in her first months made me realize how vital the early months and years are for our children's development, and that if we are going to cut away at the enormous academic achievement gap and meet parents' need in the midst of a baby boom, we need to invest more in our children's most critical learning years.

In the District, the average cost of child care is over $1,800 a month, yet the average childcare worker makes only $26,000 per year. Additionally, there are over 22,000 children under the age of three, but only enough spaces at licensed child development centers for one-third of our children.

The high cost and limited access to quality child care results in children being left behind developmentally before their first day of school and high stress for parents competing for slots. To address this issue, he conducted months of research with the help of his Transition Committee and recently met with over 40 child development providers from across the city to get their feedback. The meeting lasted over two hours as we talked candidly about what needs to be done to expand access to quality child care. The issue is incredibly complex, so he's taken their feedback and will release a series of solutions in the coming weeks.

Summer time is soon approaching and Spring helps encourage us to get summer ready. Springing our bodies forward is key to surviving the heat and humidity. One great routine to fall into is smoothies. Smoothies provide a great boost of energy and balanced nutrition. Replacing a meal with a smoothie everyday can increase your immune system, boost your metabolism, provide essential vitamins for everyday function, and improve your digestive system.

I like to make my smoothies using whatever seasonal fruits that are available, but encourage people to add whatever fruits and veggies they prefer. My favorite smoothie is a pineapple, strawberry, kale, and spinach combination. The pineapple provides a bit of citrus to help cut the bitterness of the kale and spinach. The strawberries help to sweeten the taste, and help blend the pineapple and greens together. This concoction gives me all of the nutrients and boost of energy needed to get through a busy day in the kitchen.

I encourage everyone to try a smoothie a day and let me know how it changes your life!
