Newsletter March 2017

2017 is a big year for conservation globally. The threat of climate change continues to grow, and according the the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) we are forecast to experience even more widespread and severe bleaching events than those which devastated the northern Great Barrier Reef in 2016 (read more here).

However it's not all bad news! The southern Great Barrier Reef was only mildly affected during the last bleaching events, and is now recovering.

For more information on the bleaching of the Reef, see here.

So what are we doing at Saving Nemo this year?

THE MALDIVES AND OUR FIRST RESEARCH STATION

We are very excited to announce that in July this year, 15 Flinders University undergraduate students and 5 researchers, under the supervision of Saving Nemo’s founder, Karen Burke da Silva, will be travelling to the Maldives to help establish our first international clownfish research monitoring station in partnership with Atoll Volunteers! This project has been made possible thanks to the support of the New Colombo Plan Scholarship, which will covering all student costs. However we are still in need of financial support for the researchers, who are not covered by the Scholarship. So, if you are able, and interested in this project please consider helping us out by donating via the link below.

IC-ANEMONE Citizen  Science App

In August 2016, we officially lauched our IC-ANEMONE app! Developed in collaboration with iNaturalist, users can upload information regarding anemone and clownfish sightings straight to the iNaturalist website. This information is vital to help scientists build a clearer picture of the pattern and frequency of habitat disturbance and the resilience of clownfish and anemones.

Citizen scientists can be anyone- students, snorkelers, divers, photographers, fishermen, scientists, or tourists.

So become a citizen scientist and make a difference to protect clownfish today!
