Wilson Magnet's Divine Designers Wrap Up! |
In mid-April, SewGreen@Rochester went to school, joining faculty advisor, Carol Lurye for Wilson Magnet High School's Period 11, an afterschool arts and technology program in drama, dance, music, film-making, and fashion design. Five weeks later, on the evening of May 12th, the students' completed work was on display in the school's auditorium. |
Carol, Georgia, Tiffany and Patti worked with four 9th grade students, Amarria, Hawa, Jamisha and Shauntavia - the Divine Designers - at the high school, teaching basic sewing machine skills and guiding them as they developed ideas about colors and shapes from their preliminary drawings. About mid-way into our five weeks together, we invited the students to our shop to choose fabrics. |
Once the fabric was in their hands, all the drawing, measuring, and shaping leaped from abstractions to something concrete that the girls could touch and feel. During our final week together, we worked with them at the shop after school, pinning, cutting, pressing, and stitching, getting ready for Thursday's big event. See how beautiful they are, and how proud they are of their work Many thanks to all who helped work with the students! We look forward to working with these Divine Designers again. |

Ease on Down Saturday, May 21st From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., SewGreen@ROC will be participating in the Thurston Brooks Merchants Association 5th Annual "Ease on Down" Event. We will be out on the sidewalk in front of our shop all day, with creative, hands-on crafts and activities for all ages. We will be participating in the Ease on Down raffle, so stop by and use your raffle ticket to receive a 10% discount on everything in our shop! We will also be setting up sewing machines for sale, and many of our students will be selling items they've made from fabric, yarn and notions they purchased in our shop. Many of these items were sewn on shop sewing machines! Come and see their work! And help us reduce our inventory of sewing machines. We will pair you with the perfect machine for you! |

Square Fair Saturday, June 4th The Square Fair at Aberdeen Square has a long history in the 19th Ward. No one can quite remember which year it began! This year, SewGreen@ROC will be there from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., demonstrating our treadle machines, spinning yarn, knitting and more! Stop by and say hello - and try out our fiber tools at no charge. We will not be selling anything at the Square Fair, but our shop will be open! Volunteers Needed! Both events! You can help us represent crafty goodness in the great outdoors of Arnett Blvd and Aberdeen Square! Interested? Call us at 585-328-2642 or email volunteer@sewgreenrochester.org today! |
