Get kitted out for this racing season

With the Easter holidays coming to an end it means we are getting all that closer to the coastal season. In this week’s letter there are links to order your racing kit, new blazers, upcoming events and a very important message from our water safety officer regards protecting the club from being falsely accused of incidents on the water. Please read carefully and if you have any questions Mike Green, or myself will be happy to talk them though with you.

But first heres to a fun night...

Thank you to all who joined us on Friday, it was a fabulous night, not sure much was learnt about beer and wine but much seemed to be enjoyed.

We raised over £400 to put in our new boat fund. Please join me in thinking Anna, Helen and all the merry helps (especially the washer ups) who made this night happen.

If you have any fundraising ideas you'd like help putting into action

please get in touch, we love hearing your ideas.

If you would like one it will cost £200, one the order has been made they will custom size each jacket to your individual measurements.

Please email asap if you would like to place an order.

ANY INCIDENT THAT CAUSES OR HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE DAMAGE OR INJURY IS REPORTABLE ON THE BRITISH ROWING INCIDENT SYSTEM.

As your Club’s Water Safety Adviser I have the responsibility to review all incidents that relate to members and equipment so that where necessary I can investigate and make improvement recommendations to your Rowing Committee. To this end I need your help in ensuring incidents are reported, preferably using the British Rowing Incident Reporting website. I do not see the reporting of incidents as degrading, it is a process that can assist us in learning from fellow members and be better prepared should we see a potential incident occurring. Will also improve Risk Assessment skills. Please consider the following as reportable incidents:

1)Boat handling where lifting on and off racks, trestles, trailers, in and out of the water which results in boat damage.

2)On water collisions, whether this be between Club crews and scullers, other river users(canoeists, sailing boats, anglers), channel buoys, moorings where injury to athletes, equipment and property damage may occur.

3)Capsizing. In many cases this might be simple capsizes which is ongoing with singles (this includes stage launching).

4)Going aground especially in the harbour which will result in hull damage or scratching.

5)Such accidents as indicated above when occurring at regattas and heads.

6)Athlete health issues arising during a water outing, weight training, erg work circuit training and running.

7)Incidents in the boathouse areas, e.g. hitting riggers with trailers, heads or bodies, tripping, etc.

8)Any collision or contact with moored boats.

You might consider some of these trivial but believe me, Water Safety is a key matter with British Rowing, I need your support and input to carry out the role in an effective manner.Should you have any questions, please ask.

Thanks Mike G.

Lastly, we have a number of new juniors joining our club this month, please make them feel welcome and help them out, I'm sure you all remember how confusing this sport can be to learn :)

Good luck to all those racing at Soton Head Race and Abingdon this weekend.
