Greetings everyone,

                                                       -ALUMNI ALERT-

During the November 19, 2015 South Shore International College Prep Local School Council meeting, notice of a movement to change the name of the school was brought to the floor.  The proposed name change is Willie T. Barrow, a co-founder of Operation Push with Rev. Jesse L. Jackson and others.

The proposal is being brought forward by a local neighborhood group.  The members of the group are alleged to have no ties to South Shore High School.  The group has REGULAR ATTENDANCE at the local school council meeting. They were not present at the meeting at the time notice was made public.

A LSC committee is being established to address the name change issue.  The committee will consist of school administrators, students, parents and alumni.  Meetings will be held in the near future to consider testimony for and against the proposed name change.  The LSC will make a recommendation to the Chicago Public Schools Board of Education.  The LSC recommendation has influence over the Board of Education.  The Board of Education will make the FINAL DECISION.

The alumni are sounding off about the proposed name change.

“I am totally opposed to a name change!”

- Keith J. Bledsoe

“Opposed, our legacy is at stake!”

- JoAnne Bush

“Isn't there already a street dedicated to Barrow? Enough is enough! Leave our alma mater alone.”

- Debra Allison

“Now that we have a high performance school due to very hard work by residents, business people and elected officials of South Shore and a MAJOR South Shore Graduate accomplishment, let's not deny a huge and immediate acknowledgment of what was done in unity here.”

-Yvette J. Moyo

“It's amazing to me that they want to change the name of South Shore High School to Willie T Barrow why don't they change the name of a high school that's close to her church.”

- Odell Jones

The next LSC meeting date and time to be announced.  Alumni are strongly encouraged to attend.

Who are the South Shore Tars?

Is not our legacy worth preserving?

To address the 75th anniversary of South Shore High School, a request was made to the South Shore International College Prep High School Local School Council to host an Alumni Week during the 2nd Quarter of 2016.  The purpose of the tentatively scheduled series of events is to identify our alumni and honor the legacy of our beloved alma mater.

Status of the Original South Shore High School Building

South Shore Community Action Council’s Alumni/Marketing/Event committee is charged with submitting a recommendation and hosting forums regarding the repurposing of the original South Shore High School Building.   The SSCAC is seeking new members to represent the education concerns of parents and community members.  Its service area includes South Shore International College Prep High School, Chicago Vocational, Bowen and Hirsh High School.

Our South Shore High School Alumni Association's president, Terry Hardy serves as the chairperson of the Alumni/Marketing/Event committee.

Finally, the longstanding Tars and Indians football rivalry is back with a South Shore 33-0 victory over Hyde Park.  The coveted wagon wheel is returned home and proudly displayed to students and alumni after the win.

The Tars finished the season with a record of 5 wins, 2 losses.

Alumni Appointed to Spearhead South Shore Parent Booster Club

"The first SSICP (Tars) Parent Booster Club event will take place on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 in the school cafeteria from 6pm - 8pm.  This is a rally to introduce the Booster Club to the parents, and show support for our student athletes" according to a Facebook post.

Until the next time, thank you for spreading the word about the formation of the association.  Our development continues as we connect with alumni located around the globe.  God Bless You All.
