Wardrobe Stylist, Alarna Hope was telling me that the average women in Australia is a size 14, yet we model ourselves on size 6-8 advertising all the time. Is it aspirational or depressing? I suppose everyone has a different response.
When we think about fashion, it was created to keep us warm and protected and to also express our status, our values and beliefs, our wealth. Often it was good to be a size 14 upwards as it said you could feed yourself well and therefore you were wealthy.
I remembered my Barbie and her 1mm waist and 1ft long legs - what does a little girl do with that experience, that information - strive to be something that is unobtainable?
Weight is such a big conversation and I’m hoping on my journey to bring the focus of fashion back to authentic self-expression, one filled with self-love and confidence. This action has to be done through the consciousness of being proactive in your life. If you consider your decisions to wear something from a place of creating something about you, rather than being reactive to a fearful emotion about yourself, then you will make different decisions, more empowered decisions.
