Safety, Safety, Safety!
This is a great story of survival. It illustrates the importance of safety preparedness. Yet, the sad fact is that most youth sports leagues, clubs, and middle schools do not provide training for coaches and do not have the proper safety equipment (AED, Ice tub).
The story: "At a Junior Jazz game in January, she [Kennady Kasteler] peeked through a partition and saw her friends, crying and helpless.
So the Brighton High cheerleader made her way to the other side of the gymnasium to see what was the matter.
She recognized the player on the floor. Kennady and Mike had known each other since middle school. He was on his back, his body limp, his face an unnerving shade.
He’d had a seizure and suffered cardiac arrest.Kennady, a certified lifeguard, and a parent who was a registered nurse sprung to action.
“You do two-breath ventilations and I’ll start compressions,” Kennady recalled saying. “There wasn’t time to have a reaction. You just had to go. It was like tunnel vision.”The two performed CPR until emergency personnel arrived on the scene. Later, as Mike recovered in a medically induced coma, Kennady was told her compressions were vital in saving her friend’s life."
Read the first line again: "she [Kennady Kasteler] peeked through a partition and saw her friends, crying and helpless."
Helpless? Is "helpless" what you want for your child?
Here is another story - a 10 year old collapsed as she arrived to her elementary school. "On Monday, Shawn Kelley received the call parents dread. His 10-year-old daughter had collapsed walking into Woodland Park Elementary. When Kelley arrived at the school, staff held blankets around his daughter to protect her privacy as they performed chest compressions and utilized an automated external defibrillator."
"Because Mena and the team at Woodland Park Elementary acted quickly, they helped ensure Emerson did not suffer brain damage or other long-term impairments."
"the family had been skiing just the weekend before, and had Emerson gone down in the mountains, the outcome likely would have been much different."
Are you going to be helpless? Are you going to let your child play where "helpless" is likely to be the response? Or is preparedness what you are going to demand!
Yes, this newsletter is a slap in the face. Parents, wake up!
