The TeamSafe® Report #10

The Heat ... it's coming. Are you prepared?

The heat of summer is just around the corner. Please watch: Zach Martin Memorial Foundation Cold Water Therapy Video

Some questions to ask:

1. Does the organization have ice baths field side at practices and games?

2. Does the organization provide the medical history of each athlete to the coach and is it accessible from their phone?

3. Does the organization know which athletes have sickle cell trait?

4. Does the organization provide heat injury training to every coach?

5. Does the organization have a heat plan for all events and practices that is on every coach's phone and communicated to all stakeholders in real time?

This plan is now part of our unique system and is so easy to use!

What about Return To Play after a heat injury? Here are some new evidence-based guidelines:

  • Refrain from exercise for at least 7 days after release from medical care.
  • Follow up about 1 week post-incident for a physical examination and laboratory testing or diagnostic imaging (biomarkers) of the affected organs. This will address the clinical course of the heat stroke incident.
  • When the individual has been cleared for return to activity, he or she should begin exercise in a cool environment and gradually increase the duration, intensity, and heat exposure over 2 weeks to demonstrate heat tolerance and initiate acclimatization.
  • If return to vigorous activity is not accomplished within 4 weeks, a laboratory exercise-heat tolerance test should be considered.
  • If the athlete proves heat tolerant, he/she may be cleared for full competition between 2 and 4 weeks after the return to full training.
