oVc's Ural Bobber - Impossible Fun!

It all started when Scott told me I had to take oVc’s Ural Frankenstein bobber out for a little spin.

“You won’t believe how great it rides,” he enthused.

I looked at him with all the skepticism I could muster but never one to back down from a challenge, I took the keys and wheeled oVc’s mad creation through the big roll up door to the outside parking area.

The story of the Ural bobber goes back to last winter when, obviously with an abundance of time on their hands, the oVc techs looked at an old Ural Northern Cruiser and for some inexplicable reason, saw the potential for a bobber. On the surface, taking a former sidecar rig and converting it into a customized two-wheeler seems to border on the ridiculous, but there is method in the madness.

Unlike other Urals, the Northern Cruiser does not employ a leading link front end so it is more than capable of running without a sidecar. Unencumbered from the weight of a sidecar, the massive torque the 750 cc boxer engine provides, makes for a very willing powerplant that is ideal for back-road cruising. The availability of a reverse gear may be a bit over the top, but it makes for a heck of a conversation starter at bike night!

Sitting on the bike, my first impression was that despite the old-style saddle seat, the riding position was very comfortable. The handle bars allowed my arms and hands to fall to a very natural position and the overall effect had me thinking that I was astride an early 50s machine heading off for a blast in the English countryside. Alas, there were no hedge-lined country laneways nearby so the back roads of Halton Hills would have to do.

Upon starting the bobber, the unmistakable sound of the venerable Ural boxer greeted my ears. I pulled in the clutch, tapped the shift lever down into first gear, and set off.

As expected, the bike cruised effortlessly and while the Ural bobber will never be mistaken for a Ducati Diablo, it is perfectly suited for a relaxing ride in the country. It feels immensely solid but at the same time, very maneuverable and while it does not have the tightest turning radius, it is very easy to roll from side to side on winding roads. I wouldn’t call it “flickable” by any means, but it certainly handles predictability and without any drama.

In a spirited session through farm country, it handled itself admirably and I had a massive grin plastered to my face the entire time. My apologies to the horsey people whose steeds were startled by the site of a giggling lunatic, riding hell bent for leather aboard a crazy steampunk-esque creation blasting along the usually serene roadways.

As I rolled in to the oVc parking area, Scott greeted me with a bit of a smirk knowing full well that I was having a great time on his mad creation. Until I had the chance to actually ride it, I would never have believed it could be such fun.

Fully reconditioned by the Ural experts at oVc, you can have this unique machine for just $6,500 plus HST. Take my word for it, you really need to check this one out in person.

So, who's going to Port Dover for the big Friday the 13th celebration next month?

oVc will be leaving the Acton area bright dark and early on the 13th so we can get prime setup space along the main street. Be sure to stop by and say hi if you’re also making the scene at Dover in October!
