CFK Featured Athlete Craig Thompson

We are so proud of all of our CFK Athletes! This month, we are very pleased to feature and introduce Craig!

Age: 34

Occupation: Senior Consultant Total Rewards Financial Analysis at Kellogg’s

Date Started CFK:  May 25, 2016

In general, what is your athletic background? I was a varsity athlete in high school, participated in intramurals and club boxing in college, and have been playing in rec leagues when I can find the time ever since

How did you learn about CrossFit Kalamazoo? My wife had been going to CrossFit AZO for about a year when CrossFit Kalamazoo moved to the Ravine Road location. I saw CrossFit Kalamazoo as I was driving by and since it was now so close to my house, I decided it was time to give it a try.

How has CrossFit Kalamazoo changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? I certainly never got up at 5am before I started CrossFit, now I look forward to doing it.

I haven’t changed my eating habits too much yet, but my 530am BFFs are trying to convince me to do Whole 30 with them, and I think I am going to do it.

I thought I was in decent shape before I started CrossFit, but I was totally wrong. Lifting a handful of times a week and going on a couple of 3 mile jogs each week is nothing compared to the shape I am in now. The constantly varied, total body, high intensity interval training of CrossFit has made me stronger, leaner, and much more cardio vascular fit than I was. I am able to run longer distances at a faster rate now, and in general I am running a lot less now than I did before CrossFit.

List short/long term goals you would like to accomplish through CrossFit Kalamazoo: I will get a bar muscle up soon if it kills me. Next I want to be able to do kipping hand stand push ups and then improve my Olympic lifting; starting with snatches so I don’t continue to get beat by the strong females in the 530am classes, and then my clean and jerk.

What do you like most about CrossFit Kalamazoo? Its cliché, but it is true, my favorite thing about CrossFit Kalamazoo is the people. Every day we encourage each other and push each other to get better.

What are your favorite CrossFit movements? Deadlifts, but I wouldn’t mind if I never had to do another Deadlift ladder.

What are your least favorite CrossFit movements? Anyone who has seen me struggle to do a snatch, understands why they are my least favorite.

What are you currently doing to try to improve your diet? Not a whole lot yet, but that will change if I do Whole 30. A few months ago my wife and I started the home delivery meal services. They are much healthier than the typical dinner I was eating previously. I very highly recommend them. We have tried nearly every service, so I have coupons to them all if you are interested in trying one.

Favorite movie: Too hard to pick one favorite, but some of my favorites follow: Ocean’s Eleven, Top Gun, Ghost Busters, The Sting, American History X, The Dark Knight, the Original Star Wars Trilogy

Favorite and/or current book: Shantaram. If you haven’t read it yet, you should.

Favorite music genre/artist: I like nearly every genre of music, but my favorite genre is Country. Keith Urban is probably my favorite artist, but the best show I ever saw live was Garth Brooks. I wish I could bring half of the energy he puts into each show to CrossFit each morning

Achievements you’d like to highlight within your life:

It took me 9 years to convince her, but I married the girl of my dreams.

It’s kind of silly to go back to high school athletic achievements, but I was really proud of being second team all-conference in baseball; it was my best individual athletic achievement.

In college my intramural beach volleyball team beat my wife’s team in the play-offs on our way to winning the school championship.  Beating her was definitely the highlight though.

I am very excited about my new job. I have always dreamed of working in upper management for a major corporation and I am hopeful that I can leverage this role into that.

List a few things we don’t know about you:

The scar on my stomach is from pyloric stenosis as a kid.

In fifth grade my Odyssey of the Mind team took 7th in the World competition.

Two summers ago I got a piece of pulled pork lodged in my throat so bad that I couldn’t swallow my saliva and I had to go to my wife’s ER to have it removed. Make sure to chew your food!

I am a klutz. The two items of a personal nature listed in my departure email from my last employer were my love for CrossFit and the fact that I dropped a 5 gallon water jug in our office flooding the hallway, spilled a crockpot of chili all over my car en route to the office, and knocked over countless glasses of water on my desk.

In 10 words or less, what does CrossFit mean to you? Community, challenging, rewarding, fulfilling, physically and mentally life-changing
