Hello Newsletter Readers, As always, I am excited to share some brief comments with you, our subscribers. We have completed more than seventy-five percent of our 2018 Principles of Success program and we can see the growth in many of our current participants. Nothing excites me more than to receive feedback from a prior participant and/or the parent of a prior participant. I have included the following comment from one such parent, which reflects similar feedback I have received from others connected to the Principles of Success Motivational Program. We greatly appreciate receiving such comments, as they confirm what we already know -- that our efforts are not in vain. “This program changed my son's life for the best. Being a single parent raising a strong willed African American young man in Compton was never easy. My son was blessed to be a part of this program in 2016 and 2017. These men truly care about our sons' success and continue to keep in contact with my son to this day. This mentoring program is effective and life changing for both the mentee and the parents”. Daphne Smith The young man referenced in the above comment was not seriously considering college when he enrolled in the Principles of Success Motivational Program. However, I am pleased to say that not only has he successfully completed his coursework at El Camino Community College, but he is currently attending Howard University and spends a significant amount of time helping and encouraging others. In fact, he attended our July 2018 POS session and shared his story with our current participants. I attribute the positive impact of our Principles of Success Program to the outstanding men/ leaders of our program, many of whom have a family and small children, yet make the time to have a positive impact on the lives of our young men/participants. Through the Eyes of a Parent I have attended each of the classes for 2018 and I am impressed. Not only am I impressed with the subjects and guest speakers, but also with how Don Dyer and each of the men that sponsor the program go above and beyond to give your young black men an opportunity to succeed in life. Don and his team are giving these young men the tools they will need to understand, embrace, and learn what is required to be successful. The lessons taught will enable these young men to dream big and never give up on their dreams, while also understanding that there will be disappointments in life but to never give up on their dreams. When life knocks you down, and it surely will, one must get back up and be determined to WIN. Reflecting back on my youth (a long, long time ago), I recall principles shared with me and how those conversations influenced the direction I took in life. From my parents to my teachers, I was inspired to be honest, have integrity, always do my best, and always keep God first. I hope and pray these young men understand that it is not always about the money one earns but about finding their passion in life and always being willing to reach back and help others. Billy R. Why I Volunteer Growing up, in what most would consider a challenging environment, there were no programs that I was aware of that provided and nurtured the tenets of what is required to be successful. I learned how to be successful much later on in life and with success, coupled with a vision and support of successful men, I developed a foundation and belief that I could be much greater than my circumstances. As a committed volunteer and supporter, my hope is to positively impact and inspire greatness in our young men by sharing my journey, challenges and limited success. As young men of color are consistently marginalized or presented with negative images of African-Americans, it is important for those of us who understand this fallacy to serve as positive role models for them. The greatest joy for me as a volunteer is to see our participants leave better than when he arrived; smarter, self-aware, confident, and happy for having an opportunity to be a part of this amazing program. Seeing myself in them, it gives me great fulfillment to have an opportunity to add value to their journey with the hope that they will carry forward the mission of “each one, teach one” and become highly successful in every aspects of their lives. Benefits of the Program The benefits of the POS program are multi-fold; young men get to be in and around an environment of success which challenges them to seek greatness and excellence within themselves, and provides an in-person view of men who look like them and have achieved despite challenging circumstances. The foundations of the program allow those selected young men to build their confidence to strive for greatness, under any and all circumstances, by practicing the principles of success. Each guiding principle can be utilized for the rest of their lives as a reference and model for success. Each young man that has and will come through our program will see a positive impact in almost every facet of their academic and personal lives if they are willing to apply what they have learned in the Principles of Success Motivational Program. |
