Cub Scout Pack 375

Camp & Fundraising

Special Edition

Thank you to everyone who participated in in our first ever virtual Pack meeting!  I missed seeing everyone in person, but this was a good "next best" option.  I hope all of the Scouts found it enjoyable!

This special edition newsletter is focusing on just two topics. The primary focus is Summer Camp but we also have a great "zero effort" fundraising opportunity that we want to share along with a little explanation about our current fundraising thoughts.

What kind of music should you listen to while fishing?

Fundraising

We received a couple of questions as a result of the survey in the last newsletter. In retrospect, they are questions we should have answered for you sooner, so I apologize for not doing that.

Question: Where does all of this fundraising money go?

Answer: The profit from individual fundraisers (popcorn, Marianna's, etc.) is split between the Pack's general fund and Scouts' Family Accounts.  The profit from group fundraisers (Moe's, Sweet Frog, Chick-fil-A, etc.) goes to the Pack's general fund.

The Pack's general fund is used to pay for awards, activities (Pinewood Derby, Family Picnic, supplies for Pack Meetings, etc.), the Blue & Gold Banquet, the site costs for camp-outs and other miscellaneous Pack expenses.

Question: Why are we doing so much fundraising?

Answer: It's true that we have done more fundraising in 2019 - 2020 than in years past. There are a number of reasons for this:

  • BSA significantly raised the registration fees for Scouts after we set the Pack Dues amount for the year. Rather than raising the Pack Dues mid-year, we decided to off-set the BSA increase using fundraising money.
  • As our Pack as grown, so has the need for equipment for campouts. To date, we have operated mostly by using borrowed equipment from leaders. As grateful as we are for that equipment, most of it is intended for small family camp-outs. In order to facilitate feeding larger groups, the Pack Committee would like to save some money to buy equipment intended for larger groups.
  • In addition to equipment, we need a way to transport it along with all of the food for campouts. In the past, this has been done using leader's vehicles, but it is getting to the point that we need more space. Therefore the Committee would like to save money to buy a small enclosed trailer to store and transport the Pack's equipment to & from camp-outs.  It would also be used for Summer Camp so we can transport everyone's gear to the campsite with fewer vehicles, and then left at the camp site to store food safely away from critters.

There are a few additional considerations for the 2020 - 2021 year that we are trying to prepare for:

  • We are preparing for the possibility that we may need to start paying for meeting space.
  • In 2019, over 33% of our popcorn sales came from the AOL Scouts who have now crossed over to Scouts BSA.
  • There is concern among Packs nationwide that we will have limited opportunities to sell popcorn at Storefronts (Show-N-Sell) and Door-To-Door in 2020.  If that is true, that would leave us with only on-line sales for popcorn in 2020. In 2019, less than 7% of our sales came from on-line orders.

Ultimately, the goal of fundraising is to allow the Pack to continue operating and providing quality programming and outings without having to substantially raise dues.

Changes due to COVID-19:

  • The Early Registration Deadline has been extended to June 1st. (Registration forms must be turned in to the Pack by May 29)

  • Due to the uncertainty of the situation everything here is subject to change.  The Council is meeting daily to adapt their plan as the guidelines from BSA, CDS, DOH and State of PA change.  They will do their best to update us with major changes as they happen.

  • As was previously announced, the schedule for Cub Scout Day Camp has changed (see above for schedule).

  • Cub Scout Day Camp and Webelos camp will run simultaneously, but as separate camps. Webelos camp will be run by paid camp staff, Cub Scout Day Camp will be run by volunteers.

  • The Council is looking at how to keep units together for Webelos Resident Camp and Family Overnight camp.

  • Bus transportation will  NOT be offered for Day Camp this summer.

  • Day Camp prices have been reduced by $10 / day since transportation is not being offered.

  • For people who have already paid, refunds for the $10 and 5th day will automatically be sent to the address used for registration. If you can no longer attend due to the schedule change, contact the Scout Office before June 1 and they will issue a full refund.
  • If camp is cancelled due to COVID-19, full refunds will be issued, or the money paid can be credited toward future years.

  • Canvas tents will not be available. Anyone staying overnight (Webelos Resident Camp or Cub Scout Family Camp) will need to provide their own tent. If this is an issue please let me know and we will work to find a loaner tent.

  • Campfires will be altered  to avoid large gatherings

  • Lunch for Cub Scouts and Webelos will be at different times to reduce numbers in the dining hall.  Meal times for the two groups may be staggered to further reduce numbers in the dining hall.

  • There will be no access to the dining hall in between meals

  • Sanitation procedures are being revised per CDC and DOH recommendations.

  • The Council is waiting for guidance from BSA National on possible changes to Med Form requirements. Stay tuned.

  • The following contingency plans are also being considered:
    • Rotating mini day camps in various district locations (Cub Scouts)
    • Partial on-line Webelos Camp with weekend camp on-site in late summer / fall
    • Full virtual camps

Medical Forms

BSA medical forms will be required for EVERY person at camp, including parents.

Day Camp: Part A & B

Family Overnight Camp: Part A & B

Webelos Resident Camp: Part A, B & C

Note that the forms have changed for 2020, so please download a new form using the links above.

Part C must be signed by a physician and will require that the individual has had a physical within the past year. BSA is currently reviewing a possible exception to this policy given the difficulty of getting in to see a physician. HOWEVER, if your Scout has had a physical in the past year, then it should not be an issue. Simply forward the Part C of the form to the physicians office and they should be able to complete it for you. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! Please give your physician's office adequate time to complete it before camp.

Dietary Restrictions

7MSC prides itself in being one of the few Scout camps in the area that can accommodate special dietary restrictions.  I can tell you from personal experience that they do a VERY good job with it. Please fill out the below form for anyone attending camp that requires a special diet. Forms must be turned in with registrations to give the kitchen adequate time to prepare.

Adults At Camp

Parents are encouraged to attend Cub Scout Day camp with their Scout(s) and are required to attend for all rising Tiger Scouts and for Cub Family Camp.  The following policies are in place to protect our youth:

Any adult accompanying a troop or pack to a residence camp or other Scouting activity lasting 72 hours or more must be registered as a leader, including completion of a Criminal Background Check and have taken Youth Protection Training even if they are the parent of a youth on the trip.

Youth Protection Training: If you or any other adult leaders have not had BSA’s Youth Protection Training within the past 2 years, you are required to take it before coming to camp. The course is available on-line at my.scouting.org only. The course can no longer be offered through your local Council.

PA Act 15: All staff employed by the Juniata Valley Council, BSA and Seven Mountains Scout Camp are compliant with the current Pennsylvania legislation which is designed to increase the safety of children by requiring background checks and child abuse clearances for all volunteers and staff who are responsible for children and directs the mandated report of child abuse.

ALL adults attending summer camping programs must have Criminal Background Checks/Clearances as required by PA Act 15 on file at the Juniata Valley Council Service Center to attend. Family members joining their scouts in the Family Overnight Camp are not required to provide this information. Please contact the Service Center or visit www.keepkidssafe.pa.gov for more information. NOTE: ALL BSA VOLUNTEERS ARE MANDATED REPORTERS. FAILURE TO REPORT MAY RESULT IN CRIMINAL CHARGES.
