This CCM Changes Everything

Hockey-loving Canadians could be forgiven if after reading the headline above the first thoughts that came to them were of hockey skates. Or perhaps bicycles, for those of our readers of a more vintage age, but as of now, when you see "CCM" you should think of only one thing - the best off-the-shelf, light-weight adventure tourer available!

CCM, or Clews Competition Motorcycles have been around for a number of years on the other side of the Atlantic, but these amazing machines are now available in Canada. In fact, the very first CCM to come to Canada was displayed in the oVc showroom.

Never heard of CCM?

You’re not alone as CCM has only been available on this side of the Atlantic for a short while, but CCM can trace its origins back to the early 1970s.

Alan Clews, one of Britain’s most highly regarded trials rider, could not get any of the manufacturers to provide him with a competitive machine. So, taking matters into his own hands and putting his considerable off-road expertise to work, he developed his own BSA-based scrambler model.

Clews did such an excellent job, that other riders were soon approaching him to build similar models for them! From this, came a new motorcycle company – Clews Competition Motorcycles, or CCM.
 

The CCM Advantage

The CCM lineup employs state of the art metallurgy to combine a forged aluminum frame with a machined finish. This unique frame is then mated with a high-revving, BMW 450 cc single cylinder, four-stroke engine. The result? An incredibly light weight machine that comes in at just 125 kilograms, or just a smidge over 280 lbs. Most importantly, this potent combination results in a supercar-like power to weight ratio of 0.31 HP for each kilogram.

CCM’s attention to detail is also reflected in the quality of the components used in the manufacturer of this incredible adventure tourer. With a host of optional storage solutions available, as well as several different seat heights, gear ratios, and suspension configurations, you can tune this machine to fit your personal needs!

Bond Car Update

Work has been progressing on the Bond and with the engine now removed, the engine bay has been stripped and cleaned. The engine has been dissassembled and replacment parts ordered in preparation for a complete rebuild.

The passenger compartment has also been stripped and years of debris and other crud is now being painstakingly removed. This is a perfect job for oVc's new co-op student, Alex who is a little more nimble and capable of squeezing under the dash to get at some of the more out-of-the-way spots!

Next tasks to be completed include stripping the paint from the body and reinforcing some known weak points with aluminium plate which will be bonded and welded into place. The aluminium makes welding a tricky operation and repairing the Bond reminds Ken of his days at the McDonnell Douglas facility at Pearson International where he worked on fuselage components for DC9s and DC10s.

We've just completed the setup of this nice SYM CitiCom300i and Cosy sidecar combination. Ken was able to test ride during this mild spell we've all been enjoying and he's pronounced it ready for its new owner!

BSA Ariel 3

Some people claim this unique moped was the bike that led to the demise of BSA. Nevertheless, our own head tech, Brian Jurchuk, has a soft spot for funky little machines and he found this one earlier this winter.

He is well on the way to restoring it but is in need of a fan. If anyone has spare parts or other interesting mopeds, please let Brian know!
