Model/Photo Releases
One of the questions we often get is, "When do we need to have someone sign a photo release?" A good rule of thumb is: when in doubt, yes. But it is good to familiarize yourself with what is legally required, just in case.
The thing about a photo release is that it protects you, your church, the conference office and the individual in the photo from a legal standpoint. We have a simple PDF photo release form on the Communication Department page on the conference website that is available for your use.
For most of what is printed in the Carolina Action and the Southern Tidings articles, these forms are not mandatory. Photos taken of a public event do not require releases, but if the photos might be used for promotion, fund-raising, or any other non-news outlet, you will want to get the forms signed. Our forms give permission to use the photos for ANYTHING.
Below is a video explaining "Photography Law and Model Releases," produced by a lawyer who explains why releases are important. Keep in mind that she's approaching ths subject from a professional photographer's standpoint, because that is who originally asked the question. And as always, we are available to answer any questions you might have.
