I am pleased to report that our 2017 class is off to a great start! We have 41 first-year participants and several alumni participants. Not only do we have an excellent group of young men this year, but we have outstanding parent support as well. I informed our parent group at the orientation session on May 13th that we needed 15 volunteers for our June 3rd session at Junior Achievement Finance park and we had 22 parents to sign up as volunteers! Our most recent session was held June 24th in Popovich Hall on the campus of the University of Southern California. The session was facilitated by Ed Alston and Alphonso Graves. Ed’s presentation entitled "The Big 5 of Money" was a follow-up to the Junior Achievement fieldtrip where participants were exposed to a day’s session about financial literacy, budgeting, saving, and investing. The material provided the young men with a better understanding of the 5 key financial principles needed to become smarter consumers, qualified borrowers, and informed investors. |

Alphonso Graves' presentation was on the importance of Initial/First Impressions. The primary purpose of this session is to ensure that our participants are aware of the importance of the initial impression and the difficulty, if not impossibility, of overcoming a bad first impression. Factors impacting first impressions include one’s attire, speech, attentiveness, and body language. The men leading the program have all selected proteges that they will mentor for the duration of the program year and beyond. Participants are encouraged to seek out additional mentors from our group of 18 professional men. I would also like to thank our program sponsors for your contributions and support. Each of you make it possible for us to have a positive impact on our program participants. Don E. Dyer Executive Director |

WHY I VOLUNTEER: African American men in general, but especially young African American males face disproportionate challenges in our economic and social systems. For example, African American youth graduate from high school and college at a rate far lower than White and Latino males. It is incumbent upon me to give back to help young African American males take control of their lives and their future. I have been an active Principles of Success Board Member since the program's inception (2014). It is with a great deal of enthusiasm that I look forward to the 2017 program. BENEFITS OF THE PROGRAM: The primary goal of Principles of Success Motivational Program is to inform, inspire and motivate young African American males to strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives and to believe that they can accomplish anything which they set their minds to achieve. During the course of each program year, it is amazing to witness the evolution, the change, and the growth in the program participants as they begin to grasp the material and have those "aha" moments. Once they realize that a positive mindset and strong work ethic are by far their greatest assets, they become unstoppable! We have received feedback from alumni participants confirming this truth. |

Parent Perspective Hello and Welcome Parents, How excited we are to have our young men accepted into the 2017 Principles of Success Motivational Program! I'd like to give a huge 'thank you' to all the parents who took the time to research this amazing program that provides mentoring, leadership development and so much more for our young men. Additionally, I would like to thank Don Dyer, the mentors, and the interviewing team for accepting all of our young men this year. |
|
|
As we begin our journey together, let us continue to show our young men 100% support during the entire seven months of the program, while demonstrating to the program the best parental support they have ever seen! We can accomplish this with some of the following suggestions that were shared at the orientation: - Making sure our sons read the book and if possible, read with them - Checking in regularly with our son's mentor - Each parent make it a goal to visit one session - Take advantage of the tutoring opportunities if needed - Engage in all aspects of the program Again, congratulations to both, parents for initiating the process and the young men for being selected! Warm Regards, Adrienne Mack POS 2017 Parent |

Don't Quit When things go wrong as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all up hill, When the funds are low and the debts are high And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must, but don't you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about When he might have won had he stuck it out; Don't give up though the pace seems slow-- You may succeed with another blow, Success is failure turned inside out-- The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far; So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit-- It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
