Open Mic Classical (or the mic-less open mic) Another Successful Season Report of our last Event of the Season on June 18th, 2017 |
Our June Open Mic Classical event on Father’s Day, began with a rousing rendition by all the fathers in the audience of “We Are Jolly Good Fellows!” , lead by co-founder and MC Bob Marcus, (the only peformance so far, which happened with the help of a mic, sort of launching Bob's singing career), followed by an enthusiastic round of applause from all! The atmosphere of light-hearted enjoyment never left us during all the musical events that followed, and there were many. |

New Collaborations, Variety of Instruments |
| | Flute Guitar Duo: Vicki Goldsmith (flute) and Jim Skinger (guitar) Both Vicki and Jim performed at Open Mic Classical before, solo and accompanied by others, but never together. It was great to see Vicki and Jim collaborate. What a great fit! A plus that we could hear a modern living composer play his own composition! | | |
| | String Duo: Daniel Parkington (violin) and Ellen Adamson (cello) They met at our Open Mic Classical, only a month ago, when Danny played his harp guitar. We knew about Ellen's multifaceted talents as a singer, cellist, and nyckelharpa player. As it turns out Danny also plays violin. So they joined forces and played a Bach Invention in D Minor. So great to see musicians connect, and inspire each other at Open Mic Classical! | | |

Something Old, Something New, plus a Lullaby |
| | We were pleased to have a return performance by Dan Dougherty (baritone) accompanied by Lucy Banner (piano). Dan and Lucy gave us stirring performances of Charles Ives “Memories”, and "I Remember" by Stephen Sondheim. | | |
| | Pianist Ken Newton had no idea what he tumbled on, when he accompanied his friend to Open Mic Classical. Nor did we. What a great surprise! Ken demonstrated another example of a performer playing his own beautiful composition, “Moonbeam Lullaby”. | | |
| | The first of two ensembles of the afternoon, “Sky Meadow Recorders”, an ensemble of four recorder players: Beth Taylor, Charlotte Byrne, Donna Albert, and Nancy Hart performed a mellow and smooth rendition of two late 16th- early 17th century pieces by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, showcasing four recorders of different sizes, from soprano to bass. | | |
| | Featured about a year ago, the “New Cape Musica” piano quartet returned with Peggy Lambert (piano), Michel Perrault (violin), Judy Davidson (cello) and Bob Marcus (viola), and gave a musically enjoyable performance, taking on the challenge to play the 4th movement of Mendelssohn’s Op.1 Nr 1 Piano Quartet. | | |
Neoclassical Collaboration of the two Unusual Instruments, and Voice |
Ellen Anderson (nyckelharpa) joined return performers Daniel Parkington (20 string harp guitar) and Jaia Eve (voice) in "Haida" a continuation of “Word Pie” that began at OMC last month. It is a rare treat to have these two unusual instruments - the nyckelharpa and the 20-string harp guitar - perform together, creating a neoclassical sound carpet, to go with Jaia's hauntingly beatiful narration and voice. | | |
A Father's Day Hommage Hommage to a Mother |
| | "In memory of her Polish father", Carol Davis played a Polish Dance by Xaver Scharwenka that she had learned way back in high school. | | |
| | Lary Chaplan (viola) was present with a solo piece by local composer Canary Burton - "Viola Thinks", dedicated to her mother's memory, who's name was Viola. | | |
Intergenerational Help & Collaboration |
| | J.S. Bach piano piece from the Album of Anna Magdalena Bach, performed by 7-year old Zsoka Woods with assistance from her mom, Monika. A charming piece, and charmingly performed! | | |
| | If you come to our Open Mic Classical you might win some prizes from our raffle. This month we had 3 CD's offered by local composer Canary Burton. Many of Canary's CDs are studio recorded on the Cape, hiring local musicians. | | |

Guest Performers & Collaborative Pianists |
| | New York, and Brewster based guest performer Carl Gutowski, with collaborative pianist Lucy Banner delighted us with a mini recital, showcasing French composers: Gabriel Faure’s “Berceuse” Op. 16, Claude Debussy’s “Beau Soir”, ending with Francis Poulenc “Sonata for Flute and Piano”. What a treat! | | |
| | Special thank you goes to pianists: Lucy Banner (in photo), who played in a number of today's Open Mic Classical offerings, and Elizabeth Tipton! They were our collaborative pianists on request for this season, giving a chance to many of our performers to play with piano accompaniment! | | |

And finally to the Public & Local Cultural Councils |
Thank you to our public for your continued support from the very beginning when we started in March 2015, and throughout our 3rd Season. We could not have done it without your help. Thank you for the partial support given to us as grants by the Brewster, Harwich and Orleans Cultural Councils, local agencies, which are supported by the Massachussetts Cultural Council, a state agency. |
So to all: thanks again / please come again / please spread the word from valley to hilltop so our wonderful cape classical community can continue to evolve and intertwine on our roads less traveled. |
