No One Will Out  Work Us!

May 2017

We Speak *The Talk Show

One on One with

Abdur-Rahim Briggs, President-CEO of Project Briggs, Inc.

Washington, DC – April 24, 2017 - We Speak *The Talk Show's One on One interview with Abdur-Rahim Briggs, President-CEO of Project Briggs, Inc. discusses past ventures such as the Ummah Endowment Fund from 2002-2007, his creation as the Founder and President of Al Sura, Inc. 2008-2016 to the founding and formation of his new platform and nonprofit Project Briggs, Inc. which was launched November 06, 2016 to expand its scope and services to assist with urban projects and initiatives.

In accordance with its President-CEO Abdur-Rahim Briggs' organization Motto: “No One Will Out Work Us” is the official rallying cry adopted from former DC Ward 8 Councilmember LaRuby May in an effort to successfully partner with various organizations in the area of finance, marketing, fundraising and outreach.

There is a leadership void within the community; “Allah has provided me with the opportunity to once again lead the effort.”  and with the recent untimely passing of beloved volunteers such as S. Patrick Kahozi, Donald Despertt, Derrick E. Logan and Stephen A. Maglott, Abdur-Rahim Briggs thought it would be fitting to continue this journey in honor of their memory.

Oversite Review of the D.C.'s Annual Budget

The DC Council and staff collectively invested thousands of hours in the yearly oversight process to assess the performance of over 100 District agencies across 11 committees.

Every year, from early February to late March, the DC Council conducts oversight hearings over the nearly 100 District agencies to better understand their missions and evaluate their performance before the Mayor releases her budget recommendations. Robert C. White, Jr. and his staff and spend many late nights and weekends digging through responses from over 70 agencies that fall under the five committees that he sit on.

Covering a whole month's worth of work in his newsletter would be boring, so we'll highlight a few agencies related to his priority areas of education, affordable housing, workforce development, and returning citizens. If you have specific questions about oversight, please contact DC Council Member Robert C. White, Jr.'s Legislative Director, Shawn Hilgendorf, or his Legislative Counsel, Breanna Bledsoe.

Okay so we're well into the second quarter of the year and the tax deadline has passed. At this point many of us have given up on our new year new me goals. For those who haven't kudos to you for having the perseverance and stamina to stick with those goals, and if those goals were financial even better.

One of the reasons we don't stick to our goals is because we don't plan on how to do so. Every year I see calendar charts for saving money for the year on different social media platforms but how many of us actually stick to them who've tried them.

Taking baby steps towards your goals are steps nonetheless. If you have a savings goal for the month or year, rather then trying to dump all the money in a savings account at once why not move over increments daily.

If you're already living on a tight budget and don't think your income enough to save you have two options review your budget and make sacrifices (a word many of us hate) or find methods of making additional income. DO YOUR GOOGLES!

It's still early in the year if you fell off it's not too early to hop back on!

HEALTHY EATING

L.L.S. Catering and Events

They say “April showers bring Mays flowers” and I like to apply that analogy to my catering season.  April ushers in my busy season and that means lots of work.  Although I work with food and create crazy flavors, I tend to forget to eat.  When I remember that I have not eaten I often grab the first thing I see.  Many times it’s not healthy or something that will give me the energy needed to get through my day.

My solution to this problem was snack prep.  I now prep small healthy snacks to help get me through my day without adding on the pounds.  For example, I bought a pack of clear cups and added a little ranch dressing to the bottom of the cup.  Then I layer celery, carrots, and broccoli in the cup.  When I’m ready to eat my snack I grab from fridge, shake the ingredients together, and continue on with my day.  This routine allows for me to keep the calories down and not feel sluggish all day.

I challenge you for the month of May to snack prep and keep me posted on your progress.  There are so many ways to snack prep you just may stick to it. Here are a few of my favorites: homemade fruit cups, cup salads to go, and yogurt parfaits.

Happy healthy snacking!
