Residency Notes #1
My task was from the beggining of this project to reapropriate myself from Hokusai's image of the 'Big Wave' and from there elaborate different connections and dialogues...instead during this first month of residency in Japan, I was swallowed by the big wave of Tokyo city and its mouvements, sounds, rhythms, images and people and it has been an amazing and memorable experience. As the french impressionists and Debussy and Baudelaire got inspired and influenced by Hokusai's work, I have been collecting in my body impressions of this impressive city. From my twisted western eyes I dive freely in all the clichés and let myself go in this wave. It has been a wave of good feelings, rich and diverse experiencies and happy and fruitfull encounters. An inspirational month that will shape and feed the process of creating this solo until its premiere in November.
The gentleness, the smile, the civism, the sensibility and attention for the detail of all the people (strangers included) that I have encounter in this first trip to Japan made this month of creative residency here in Tokyo during Sakura Season (Bloosing Cherries) an amazing experience contributing for turning the project "In the range of a wave" a very special, fullfilling and productive creative experience. Although Japan is a society full of rules, rituals and artificialism, it is also a society full of diversity and multiple identities - here all conjunctions, coexistences and mixtures seem possible. There is a simultaneous charm between the preservation of the traditional culture and a fascination for the future and the technological that appears to be very singular (and apparently contradictory) in a strongly capitalist society but where, despite everything, there is no normative logic subjected to the western monopoly creating possibilities for a kind of resistance and alternative. Although I do not speak this language I recognize in these people and in this culture(s) and in the diversity of everyday life in Tokyo a language that I feel close to and with which I feel comfortable and identify myself - despite the intense movement and traffic of people and the sometimes mind-boggling speed, here in Tokyo there is also time to breathe, smile, wait, look at the trees and listen to the birds (maybe the old Europe still has time to see a possible future here).
This first month of residency in Tokyo couldn't be possible without the finantial support for Internationalization from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Portugal) and also with the support from the local organizations here in Tokyo - Ryoguko Bear studio and Ko Murobushi Archive, specially with the help and collaboration of Kimiko Watanabe (Ko Murobushi Archive/Shy) and Lang Craighill (Ryoguko Bear) to whom I am deeply greatfull for their input since the beggining - Obrigado!

Notas de Residência #1
O meu objectivo desde o início deste projecto era reapropriar-me da imagem icónica da Grande Onda de Hokusai e a partir dessa imagem explorar e traçar diferentes ligações e diálogos e imaginários...ao invés fui engolido pela grande onda que é a cidade de Tóquio - os seus movimentos, ritmos, trânsitos, sons, imagens, pessoas. Da mesma forma que os Impressionistas franceses e Debussy e Baudelaire se inspiraram e influenciaram pela obra pictórica de Hokusai, também eu me tenho deixado 'imprimir' e 'impressionar' colecionando no meu corpo diferentes impressões desta cidade.
A partir dos meus olhos ocidentais (mais perto do que longe) mergulho livremente em todos os clichés deixando-me levar pela ondulação desta onda de sensações.
A gentileza, o sorriso, o civismo, a sensibilidade para o detalhe de todas a pessoas (conhecidos e desconhecidos) com que me cruzei nesta primeira viagem ao Japão durante a Sakura Season com as Cerejeiras em Flor, tornaram este mês de residência criativa em Tóquio para o desenvolvimento do meu solo "No intervalo de uma onda" um projecto muito especial e uma experiência marcante ao nível pessoal e produtiva ao nível artístico. Apesar de ser uma sociedade cheia de regras, rituais e artificialismos é também uma sociedade cheia de diversidade e múltiplas identidades - aqui todas as conjunções, coexistências e misturas parecem possíveis. Há um encanto simultâneo entre a preservação do património da cultura tradicional e um fascínio pelo futuro e pelo tecnológico que não deixa de ser singular numa sociedade fortemente capitalista mas onde apesar de tudo não impera uma lógica normativa e um monopólio ocidental criando possibilidades para uma espécie de resistência e alternativa.
Apesar de não falar esta língua reconheço nestas pessoas e na diversidade do quotidiano de Tóquio uma linguagem que me é próxima e com a qual me sinto confortável e com a qual me identifico - apesar do movimento e trânsito de pessoas e da velocidade por vezes alucinante e estonteante da cidade de Tóquio, aqui também há tempo para respirar, sorrir, esperar, olhar as árvores e ouvir os pássaros (talvez a velha Europa ainda vá a tempo de ver aqui um futuro possível).
Este primeiro mês de Residência em Tóquio não seria possível sem o Apoio (essencial) à Internacionalização da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian a par do apoio dos parceiros locais do Projecto aqui em Tóquio - Ryoguko Bear studio e Ko Murobushi Archive, especialmente pela ajuda e colaboração dedicada da Kimiko Watanabe e Lang Craighill quem esto especialmente grato - Obrigado!
