Commercial Interior Design Awards CID magazine once again paid tribute to the projects, interior design firms and designers making their mark on the region’s interior design industry. Now in its 10th edition, this year’s CID Awards ceremony was held at Joharah Ballroom, Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai on 21 September, gathering under one roof more than 700 influential members of the Middle East’s design community. |

Swedish Design Days Under the patronage of H.E. the Ambassador of Sweden the first edition of Swedish Design Days will be launched in Dubai. The Association of Professional Interior Designers (APID) in association with leading Swedish design companies, Fagerhult, NCS Colour Academy Sweden, Kinnarps and Buisness Sweden who hosted events in Dubai on the 7th & 8th September 2016. Delegates arrived from Sweden to present informative talks at events presented to APID members and others in the interiors community in Dubai. For the first time in the UAE, NCS Colour Academy hosted the internationally acclaimed 2-day Colour, Light & Design course at the Kinnarps showroom in d3, specially designed for lighting and interior designers in the region. A special presentation by world expert Henrik Clausen, Director of Fagerhult Lighting Academy on The science of human centric lighting: What we know and how to apply it, was well received by designers who enjoyed his presentation at a private event at Intersect by Lexus. |

IPAX Africa & Arabia Sneha Divias, Architect & Design Director at S2 Interiors, APID company members, currently manages a portfolio of residential and commercial projects for property developers in the region and the government of Sharjah. International dignitaries in attendance including His Excellency Majid Saif Al Ghurair, Chairman of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, officially open the 17th edition of the Dubai based trade show. Local and international dignitaries from Germany and the Philippines also explored the 600 exhibitor stands on display from more than 50 countries. Her Excellency Sheikha Dr Hind bint Abdulaziz Al Qassimi opened the DA International Interior Design LLC stand in support of the arts and interiors company, as well as its local and international artists on display. The show also welcomed both Ambassador of Ireland, Patrick Hennessy, and His Excellency Christian Watts, Consul General of Switzerland. |

Golden Design Tour Exhibition Exchange Meeting and Global Tour Exhibition of Golden-Creativity Prize Winners APID Director, Renae Hewitt, was honoured to be invited to the Ductac exhibition that unveils Chinese interior designers to the Gulf. Designers from Taiwan and China exhibited at Dubai Community Theatre & Arts Centre (DUCTAC) for the second edition of Sino-Arab International Design, hosted by China International Interior Design (CIID). |

Its extended title, Exchange Meeting and Global Tour Exhibition of Golden-Creativity Prize Owners in Dubai, sets out its aims and purpose – to award 10 designers from Asia with a platform to meet and network with their counterparts and potential clients in the Middle East, while exhibiting some of their key projects in commercial, residential, hospitality, and arts and entertainment. CIID has createde a prize "INNODESIGN PRIZE" in Metz of France under the support of French Design Institute. Along with a prize in Beijing and Los Angeles, Dubai will soon be the 4th city on the list. APID is in talks to create a new prize for the Middle East. |

Session on Woodcarving APID Students Chapter, Manipal University, conducted a 'Session on woodcarving' at ANID Showroom. Murtaza Aliasgar, Director of ANID & visiting consultant at Manipal University, conducted the hands on session. This was a very unique experience for the participants to explore their skills with woodcarving tools and also create carving with gold foil. Smart Cities Competition Entries open to all universities Launch on 18th September with 9th October deadline! As part of Design Week Dubai 2016, The Canadian University is hosting a competition and welcomes entries from all universities. There will be three options for entry for the competition based upon the Dubai’s Smart City Initiative. As Dubai has evolved into a 21st Century metropolis in a short time, the initiative is based on the pillars of life, society, mobility, economy, governance and environment. There will be three options for entry based upon the Dubai’s Smart City Initiative. Option 1: As part of the ‘Silicon Park’ project there will be charging docks for smart devices incorporated in the streetlights. You are asked to design a cover/pod incorporating the streetlight and allowing the user time to interact with the technology in Dubai’s climate. Option 2: Again as part of the ‘Silicon Park’ project there will be commercial and residential areas, running and cycling tracks, shopping center etc. Considering the urban landscape of this type of project you are asked to design a way finding pattern that would be used as a path/flooring, which can be manipulated with color or scale. This pattern must embrace tradition and sustainable materials. Option 3: There will be Charging Stations for Electric Cars and Smart rechargeable bikes around the park and residential area. You are required to design a car shelter that covers two electric car-docking stations. This devise must embrace tradition and technology at the same time. The city of Dalian adopts the IFI Interiors Declaration On 22 September 2016, Vice Director of Dalian Urban and Rural Construction Committee Li Dongye and IFI President Elect Steve Leung signed the IFI Interiors Declaration adoption of Dalian, in China. The ceremony was also attended by Member of Dalian Urban and Rural Construction Committee Han Wei Dong, President of the China National Interior Decoration Association (CIDA) Liu Yi, Vice President and Secretary-general of CIDA Zhang Li, President of Dalian Interior Decoration Association (DIDA) Wang Ge Lian, IFI Resource Council Chief Representative Ready Zhang and IFI Asia Regional Leader Constance Ann. During the ceremony, Dalian government officials highlighted their commitment to put forward people-oriented design that furthers the development of urban culture and social economy. The city of Dalian welcomed Interior Architecture/Design individuals and organizations to come to their city to create an outstanding environment that enriches the well-being of its community. |

Hala Zaid AlSabouni American University of Sharjah (AUS) Internship at Ellington Group Soon after I graduating with a Bachelor degree in Interior Design and Minor in Design Management, Hala was eager to start working so she could expand her knowledge and experience in the field as a young professional. "With the help of APID, I was able to get an interview with Ellington Group, a development company established in 2014 which dedicates its work to creating high-quality lifestyles with compelling architecture and design for luxury residences and communities. I can easily say that it has been an enlightening experience as I am learning something new everyday. With the knowledge I'm gaining from my colleges and work tasks, I feel more confident in the way I begin to build my career as a young designer.
