WHAT IS E-BENEFITS?

eBenefits is a joint VA/DoD web portal that provides resources and self-service capabilities to Veterans, Service members, and their families to research, access and manage their VA and military benefits and personal information. eBenefits uses secure credentials to allow access to personal information and gives users the ability to perform numerous self-service functions. It also provides a list of links to other sites that provide information about military and Veteran benefits. It is an essential way for Veterans, Service members, and their families to receive access to and service from VA and DoD.

WHAT CAN I DO IN E-BENEFITS

Some of the features within eBenefits allow Veterans and Service members to access official military personnel documents, view the status of their disability compensation claim, transfer entitlement of Post-9/11 GI Bill to eligible dependents (Service members only), and register for and update direct deposit information for certain benefits. For a full list of features, see the reverse side of this fact sheet. New features are being added regularly.

HOW DO I ACCESS E-BENEFITS?

eBenefits is located at ebenefits.va.gov. Before Veterans can access and use eBenefits they must be listed in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and obtain a DS Logon. Service members can access eBenefits with a DS Logon or Common Access Card (CAC). They can choose from two levels of registration, DS Logon Level 1 (Basic) and DS Logon Level 2 (Premium). Note: If Veterans attempt to register and are informed they have no DEERS record, VA will first need to verify their military service and add them to DEERS. All VA Regional Offices have staff familiar with procedures for adding a Veteran to DEERS.

Scholarships for military children who have lost a parent

Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation (Fallen Patriots) provides college scholarships and educational counseling to military children who have lost a parent in the line of duty or due to service connection. We aim to bridge the gap in funding between the VA and other grants, and the total cost of undergraduate college education.

Financial help includes, but is not limited to, ACT/SAT prep and fees, college application fees, tuition, summer courses, study abroad programs, books, living expenses, computers, and student loans. Public and private institutions, colleges, universities, and vocational schools are all covered under our program.

We serve the children (i.e. step, foster, and adopted) of fallen service members – including combat, training, illness and suicide. We serve all components and branches of the military, and all eras of service (pre-9/11 and post-9/11). We have no maximum or minimum age limit to enroll, and encourage families to enroll their children as early as possible so we can maintain contact over the years. A minimum 2.0 GPA (for the previous term enrolled) is required to maintain eligibility for scholarship assistance.

For additional information contact the Enrollment Coordinator at

enrollments@fallenpatriots.org or at 866-917-2373.

Zero Percent Interest Student Loan Benefit for Military Service

Federal law exempts members of the military from paying interest for up to 60 months on certain student loans while serving or having served in an area that qualifies them to receive hostile fire or imminent danger pay. Service members and veterans can also apply retroactively based on previous qualifying military service. This benefit applies to direct loans or a portion of a direct consolidation loan made on or after Oct. 1, 2008.

Taking advantage of this student loan benefit is simple and straightforward. Eligible active duty, National Guard, and Reserve service members and veterans can take these actions to avoid student loan interest:

  1. Check your loan type and servicer by logging in to “My Federal Student Aid” at: StudentAid.gov/login.
  2. Contact your loan servicer to find out how to provide any of the following forms of proof:
  • A leave and earnings statement showing receipt of hostile fire or imminent danger pay
  • A certifying official’s statement and signature
  • Military orders showing service in a hostile area

Are you ready to help put a child on a path to greater success?

Complete a BBBS application through the Military Student Advocate on your campus.

This is a great opportunity for our military-connected students to ‘give back’ by volunteering and investing in the lives of local youth. BBBS’s mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported, one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

How it works

Volunteers/Mentors are called “Bigs”; Children/Mentees are called “Littles”

An adult, a “Big”, is matched with a child, a “Little”, based on similar interests.

The match will spend time together at least twice a month.

Each volunteer is asked to commit to at least one year as a mentor.

DESCRIPTION:  Volunteer, fellowships, and service opportunities for veterans

WEBLINK:  missioncontinues.org.

The Mission Continues empowers veterans who are adjusting to life at home to find purpose through community impact. We deploy veterans on new missions in their communities, so that their actions will inspire future generations to serve.  Since our founding, we have always been a nonprofit, non-partisan organization dedicated to bringing together veterans and innovative community organizations to create transformational change for communities in need all across the country.  Our operations in cities nationwide deploy veteran volunteers alongside non-profit partners and community leaders to solve some of the most challenging issues facing our communities: improving community education resources, eliminating food deserts, mentoring at-risk youth and more.  Through this unique model, veterans build new skills and networks that help them successfully reintegrate into life after the military while making long-term, sustainable transformations in communities and inspiring future generations to serve.
