Does April Snow Bring May Showers? The old expression "April showers bring May flowers" might be just that this year, an expression. This year, we have been hit by a couple of significant snow storms in April. Finally, as April has come to a close, we are starting to see some of the temperatures rise, and a possibility of showers in the future. We hope you have been able to get outside and enjoy some of these beautiful weekend days as the weather warms up and we begin to see signs of spring everywhere. |

ICLS and What We Provide ICLS entails the ability to complete all services for our clients. The services that CHC provides include homemaking services, personal cares, and ILS. When working with elderly ICLS clients, the goal is to help them maintain a sense of independence while also being there to support their living environment in helping to maintain a clean and safe environment, providing personal cares when the client needs such services: showers, hair care, moisturizing, hand/nail care (do NOT cut toe nails), etc. In this role, you may also provide medication reminders, but you may NOT administer medications. Additionally, you will be there to support your client in other areas of life which may include keeping up to date on paying bills, supporting the client with grocery shopping, medical appointments, etc. You are THE one go-to caregiver for this client. If your client is new to our agency, you may need to touch base with various family members, neighbors, friends, etc. to see if those people had been providing such services and work together to transition those services to you as the caregiver. Some of the family member, neighbors, and friends may not know what services you are able to provide and will be happy to give those tasks to you; however, others may want to continue caring for their loved one and/or friend. Either way, it is important to have those conversations so that we know what our role is within the client's care team. Be proactive in working to provide all of the cares we are able to provide within the scope of ICLS and within the comfort levels of the clients and their other caregivers. |

Springing into Spring The weather is getting warmer, the snow is melting (hopefully it will be done snowing for several months), and hopefully we will be seeing green grass and leaves soon. This is an opportunity for us to help our clients to move and enjoy the outdoors. Movement and sunshine have proven beneficial effects on mental health, physical health, and motivation. Like us, many of our clients have been cooped up indoors for the past six months, and their health may be suffering as a result. How might you as a caregiver help to encourage your clients to be more active and begin to get out? If time permits, offer to sit with your client outdoors, go for walks, go to a park, etc. Help your client to see the beauty of the four seasons that Minnesota brings. We only have this short spring season for another few weeks and then mosquito season will be upon us. Enjoy the beauty of spring while you can! |

Proactive Productivity As Compassionate Home Care has been communicating with clients about their satisfaction, it has become obvious that one of the underlying compliments that the caregiving team has received from clients is their appreciation of the way that CHC caregivers immediately step right in to take care of business without having to be constantly told what to do. Many of our clients have worked with other agencies and caregivers who just stand around (or sit around) waiting for the client to direct their every move. Many of the CHC clients have expressed that this does not happen with the CHC care team, and they have expressed over and over how appreciative they are that the caregivers come in ready to begin with whatever they see needs to get done without having to be “trained” by the client. If you are a caregiver who looks around, sees something that needs to get done, and goes about fulfilling that need, we are so appreciative of the way you have helped our agency to stand out above the rest. If you are a caregiver who still feels uncomfortable with going into a client’s home and treating it as your own, please know that is what most of them want. They want you to see a need and tell them that you are going to take care of that need. For example, "I see you have some dishes, and your floors could use vacuuming. I will start with that, is that okay with you?” Ultimately, our clients want to be able to trust their caregivers are going to be utilizing the time they have been granted by their case managers without having to micromanage them telling them every little task to complete. Please continue to be proactive and productive by showing your ability to see a need and meet that need. We are so blessed to be a part of a care team of strong caregivers who have demonstrated proactive productivity to their clients. |

APRIL Highlights (Keep them Coming) Compassioante Home Care, we have had some important things going on in APRIL! - Tracy has returned from her back injury, and the CHC team and her clients are so happy to have her back. She has learned about her client’s interests and found a throw that the client has decided to use as a wall hanging.
- Tracy celebrated her client’s 70th birthday with a birthday breakfast celebration.
- Tracy has been busy helping her ICLS client to gain more home hygiene.
- Tracy is helping to clean up mold and years of clutter and living environment hazards.
- Vicki has continued to help her ICLS clients to get their clean living environments in order. She has most recently tackled a bathroom which has not shined like this for many years.
- Jessica works through a maze of stuff as one week her client is able to maintain a clean living environment, but the next week it looks like a labyrinth of boxes and newly acquired things.
- Lisa Bee has been busy building strong relationships with her clients as she has quickly jumped in to helping them to manage their appointments, their prescription refills, their groceries and food, and personal cares. She has been willing to jump in and do anything that her clients need to help them to continue living independently at home.
- Tami S. has recently picked up shifts for several caregivers as they have taken time off for various reasons, and the clients have quickly appreciated how hard she has worked to provide for their needs. She seamlessly picked up where the regular caregiver left off, which provided the clients with a sense of comfort and confidence.
- Vicki got her workout in as she shoveled her client’s driveway by hand after our latest (and hopefully last) snow fall. She could not park in the client’s driveway, so she took matters into her own hands and cleared the driveway herself; the snowwas up to the middle of her knee at the street and up to the middle of her calf everywhere else.
- Tammie B. has been willing to jump in wherever she can, and most recently on her lunch break, she stopped by a client’s home, checked on the client, and made sure her blood sugar machine was working correctly, and reported her findings all before heading to her second client’s house for work. Tammie definitely demonstrates her team mentality and willingness to step in where there is a need.
- Cindy has been cooking up a storm for many of her clients who appreciate her ability to look around the kitchen at what food is there and whip up a tasty and nutritional concoction that her clients can eat for several days.
- Christine has been busy making phone calls to your clients asking them about their services and seeking feedback about their satisfaction with those services. She has been so impressed by the overall satisfaction that our clients have expressed in the care, compassion, and attention that our clients have expressed in those phone calls, and she has commented on the overall attentiveness of the CHC team to meeting client needs.
- Way to go CHC team members! According to the CHC client satisfaction survey, our clients have a satisfaction rating of almost 100% when it comes to friendliness and caring attitude of their caregivers and that is all because of you and your dedication to meeting their needs.
- Thank you, Christine, for spending hours on the phone with clients and for following up with those clients you could not reach in order to show that each client’s feedback matters, and all of them deserve to have a voice in regards to their care and services.
- Amy has been filling in for ILS clients left and right, and as she has filled in, she has been asking them about their services and about their satisfaction with those services. She has found that overall, Compassionate Home Care’s ILS clients are happy with their caregivers and feel that their caregivers are genuinely helping them to reach more and more of their ILS goals.
- In addition, Amy has been working to continually provide feedback to case managers about how much you are doing with your clients in order to demonstrate that the Compassionate Home Care values are a part of each and every one of our care team members.
- Teri helped her ILS client create a chart for food expiration and safe handling. Teaching such life skills will create those independent life skills
- Marie took her client to the ER for a panic attack and got his medications. She has also been working hard to help her client reach his fitness goals.
- Vicki is working hard to help one of her clients to get housing.

Client Referrals Have you ever wondered how did your client found Compassionate Home Care? Most of the Compassionate Home Care clients are referrals by county caseworkers. However, there are databases which contain the names of home healthcare agencies which provide people with contact information about nearby agencies. Compassionate Home Care tries to accept all clients because we want to help as many people as possible. Sometimes clients do not find our agency to be a fit for them due to their health needs and/or our agency policies, but we try to work with everyone who comes to us with needs. |

Homemaking/Companion Care Staff: Darian Donovan Darian D. began working with Compassionate Home Care in October of 2017, and she quickly began to be a bright spot in her clients’ weeks. Her clients began calling us to let us know how much she helped them and supported their needs. This led to her taking on ILS very quickly which fits Darian’s interests as she is currently in school studying psychology. She enjoys learning about the mental needs of her clients and helping them within their home environments to create a calmness for them in regards to their living spaces. Darian’s clients appreciate that she jumps right in to care for them without having to be micromanaged and told what to do. She sees the needs and she proactively works to meet those needs. Darian’s clients have commented that she has dug into some large cleaning projects and most of her clients have rated her services highly. They appreciate her level-headedness and her calm demeanor which, in turn, helps them to remain calm. She is professional and compassionate to her client’s needs and demonstrates flexibility when it comes to attending appointments with them and helping them to problem solve.

| | ILS Trainer: Charles Kelley Charles has had to make many sacrifices over the past month. Charles has had several ILS clients who are on the brink of being homeless or actually are homeless. This has created some extremely stressful circumstances for him and for his clients; in fact, he has even had to open up his home to allow his ILS client a place to stay as a last resort. Additionally, he has worked to encourage his clients to make phone calls, or he has made phone calls on behalf of his clients to help them to resolve their housing situations. Charles has been able to help one of his clients reduce some fines by several hundred dollars, he has assisted another client in finding assistance for a down payment on a new apartment, and he has put in long hours while balancing the needs of his own family. Charles has been working toward his performance evaluation goals while also working to maintain a sense of normalcy for his clients as they face many challenges and setbacks. | | |
|
| | ICLS/Direct Caregiver: Tracy Skaar Tracy has been working with Compassionate Home Care since October 2017 and throughout this time, Tracy has demonstrated the mission of Compassionate Home Care in that she has a heart of compassion and a dedication to her client’s needs. She has been able to build strong relationships with her clients and is nurturing to all of their needs and circumstances. She has been flexible in that when there are shifts in her schedule/client roster, she has willingly accepted new clients and stepped in to care for those clients’ needs. Tracy strives to learn about her clients and connect with them as a companion in order to provide the most heart-felt care for them. One of her clients recently contacted the agency to talk about all that Tracy does for her. Stacey began to take notes about all of those important caregiving tasks, and four pages later, the client finally concluded with saying that Tracy is irreplaceable, and Compassionate Home Care would have to agree. Tracy deserves the ICLS caregiver of the month honor as she recently took on caring for an ICLS client that will require a significant amount of compassion, guidance, and emotional attention, and she did so without hesitation. | | |

CONGRATULATIONS TO MARCH'S VIRTUAL MEETING DRAWING WINNERS Thank you to those of you who took time out of your busy lives to view the virtual meeting. Many home healthcare companies require their employees to schedule their lives around mandatory meetings, which require them to drive to the office. We wanted to be mindful of your busy lives and make our meeting virtual. Please take the time to view the virtual meetings as they contain important information about our services and updated policies. Congratulations to our February drawing winners, Paula and Lisa who will both be receiving gift cards!
