We are so proud of all of our CFK Athletes!

This month, we are very pleased to feature

Nate Button!

CFK Featured Athlete: Nate Button

Age: 32

Occupation: Systems Analyst

Date Started CFK:  Feb 20, 2017

In general, what is your athletic background? I played sports all during my childhood and through High School. Football, baseball and wrestling. My true love always being baseball.

How did you learn about CrossFit Kalamazoo? I work with Sheila and had met Al as well, and knew they both went to Kzoo. I knew it would be easier to go to a box where I already knew people.

How has CrossFit Kalamazoo changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness?
It has completely turned my life back around. As can be imagined being a 3 sport athlete when I was growing up I was in great shape.

Once I left school and got to work in an office everything changed. I started my Journey at 360 pounds and barely being able to make it through a WOD without feeling like I might die… 10 months later I’m down 130 pounds and able to pretend like I know how to workout again.

Combining this with macro tracking (which yes means I weigh everything even celery haha) it made all the difference. I feel strong again like I once did and still hate running just as much as I ever did… I feel happy I will be here to see my son grow up and not go to an early grave leaving him without a father.

List short/long term goals you would like to accomplish through CrossFit Kalamazoo:

Short term is to finish losing the weight and get down to 190.

Long term is just to get better at the technique of the Olympic lifts and get those weights up. Maybe learn to like running, that is probably not true though.

What do you like most about CrossFit Kalamazoo?  I like how it feels like coming home. It just part of my life now. I feel bad when I miss a day. Mostly because people then must hear Al complain I didn’t make it in.

What is your favorite CrossFit movement? I’m sure everyone thought that I was going to put deadlifts here… SURPRISE it is snatches even if my PR isn’t very high.

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement? Another surprise here maybe, but DL deficit ladder, I hope to never do another one… Also, OH squats, but that is because I’m bad at them.

What are you currently doing to try to improve your diet? I just work on staying consistent with tracking the macros and getting the fats in… Always too much protein and not enough fats.

Favorite movie:

- Office Space

- Seven Pounds

- Deadpool

Favorite and/or current book:

Favorite: Harry Potter

Current: Chasing Excellence by Ben Bergeron (I highly recommend reading this!)

Favorite music genre/artist: I like a little bit of everything, but heavy rock is a go to most times.

Achievements you’d like to highlight within your life: The first and most important has been raising and helping my son grow into a smart and respectful man. Of course though losing 130 pound so far is up there too.

List a few things we don’t know about you:

I have been on two private tours of the white house.

I used to be a ninja, but I gave up on that life and there is no going back now.

I really love pandas and hope to befriend one and have it as a roommate one day.

I have always wanted to go to London for Christmas. It is my favorite holiday and they make it look like magic there.

In 10 words or less, what does CF mean to you? Taking back life while getting strong and having laughs!
