AWC 1st Quarter 2017 Newsletter

Check out what A Writing Chance has been up to!!!

A Writing Chance, a NJ Non Profit Corporation, established 2016, is leading creative writing movement across the nation, which focuses on sharing the importance and benefits of writing with the nation’s Youth.

We introduce and cultivate the art of writing, while encouraging both children and adolescents to pursue, explore and remain passionate regarding writing as an integral part of their present and future.  We empower, encourage, and support each individual’s writing efforts, from writing as a hobby, all the way to becoming a published author.

Successful Launch Event!!!

Back in November of 2016, AWC was blessed to host our launch event!  In an effort to inform the community of our Mission & Vision, we provided them with a presentation detailing our Services for Youth, and our plans to grow this Creative Writing Movement.  The Youth were able to engage in a Creative Writing Activity, while their families and support systems asked questions and familiarized themselves with the organization.

We were also able to invite 3 Speakers who gave their insight on how both Creative Writing & the Arts have impacted their lives:

Nini - Simone - Young Adult Fiction Author - The Author of a numerous Young Adult Fiction novels, with her latest release being, 'Dear Yvette', spoke to our Youth about her passion for writing, and the importance of following/making time to pursue your dreams.

AWC collaborates with The House of Love Soup Kitchen on their Black History Year 'Round Program

During the first weekend in March, AWC celebrated Black History!!! A huge THANK YOU to Tamam Tracy Moncur and The HOUSE of LOVE SOUP KITCHEN for giving A Writing Chance  the opportunity to work with the Youth on their production of 'The Bombing Tragedy of 1963'!!! 🤓🤓🤓

The skit was written in its entirety by the Children 😍 They also were the actors and put on a great performance full of talent, education, and Black History ❤ They created artwork for display at the venue that depicted their feelings regarding the 4 Black School Girls that were killed in Birmingham, AL on September 15, 1963. They conducted research to ensure the content of their script was accurate... It truly was amazing to watch them shine!!!

I look forward to future collaborations which create platforms for the Youth to use their creativity and critical thinking abilities towards a project that will inspire them into the future!!!

The HOUSE of LOVE SOUP KITCHEN is located in the dining hall of The Church of God & Saints of Christ, 589-595 Central Ave., Newark, NJ 07108 - food pantry and hot meals served Tuesday evenings from 5:30 - 7:30)

CONGRATULATIONS to Sharen Butler-Martin

on being featured as AWC's 1Q17 Creative Writing Prompt Winner!!!!

Winter crept in one day on feet of clay

Dimming our dance, a wonderful thing of yesterday

Days gone by, the leaping and flying

With ne'er a thought for Winters' dying

Alas, two hearts of seasons past

Envisioning bodies moving and shadows being cast

The one thing we remember

Surely feel in our bones

Is the Spring of our Winter

And memories ne'er grown cold
