ATI Celebration Rescheduled |
Event Rescheduled for April 8, 2017: The event that was originally scheduled as Aviation Trail's Celebration of the 113th Anniversary of FIRST POWERED FLIGHT, planned for December 17, 2016, had to be postponed due to unforeseeable circumstances. A new date has been announced, and the "Celebration Event" will now be held on April 8, 2017. Since that date is close to the 150th anniversary of Wilbur Wright's birth (April 16, 1867) the theme will be a "Celebration of Wilbur Wright's Birthday", as well as a belated celebration of the first powered flight. The program will still be held at Sinclair Community College, as originally planned. |
The event will be held in the UAS Indoor Flying Pavilion at Sinclair Community College (Building 18), with an open house at the National UAS Training & Certification Center (Building 13) which is home to the nation’s first permanent, custom-built unmanned aerial systems (UAS) flying facility. There will be two featured speakers at the event: Dr. Andrew Shepherd and Dr. Ronald Storm, both from Sinclair Community College and both Ohioans. Further details, with schedule, times, menu, and reservation information will be announced soon. |

At a press conference on August 19, 2016, Aviation Trail announced the acquisition of two historic buildings in the Hoover Block of Dayton's West Third Street in the Wright-Dunbar neighborhood. The Pekin Theater building and the Fish Market buildings lie just to the east of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park building at the corner of S. Willliams and W. Third. The plans are to renovate the buildings and the facility into an aviation educational site. The announcement was made at ATI's annual celebration of the August 19 birthdays of Orville and Katherine Wright, and National Aviation Day. |

Wing Spar Assembly: One of the highlights of the Aviation Trail August 19th celebration was a hands-on demonstration of the assembly of wing struts for a 1903 Wright Flyer. The wooden pieces were placed in a form to hold them in position and glued into place. The example spars will be used in the construction of a replica aircraft. The celebration was held at the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park in honor of the August 19 birthdays of Orville and Katherine Wright, as well as the date of National Aviation Day. Guests at the event were given a tour of the site and enjoyed an ice cream social (with birthday cake) as part of the day's festivities. |
