K PLAN NEWS I am sad to report to families and providers that Camp Yakety Yak will NOT be able to accept the K-Plan this year, and in the forseeable future. CYY does not have any full time employees except during the summer time when camp is happening. As a result, we do not have the necessary administrative infrastructure to comply with State regulations and the complex billing requirements of the K Plan. Our small administration team must focus on developing our specialized curriculum, acquiring and training staff, and efficient processing of camper registrations, staff background checks. I am sorry that this decision may make CYY unaffordable for some families and we will refund registration fees, if parents were counting on this funding. The CYY Board of Directors continue to work hard to fundraise so we can offer partial need-based scholarships to families. View State Regs here to see why we made this decision. -- Thank you for your understanding! Angela Arterberry Sullivan, Camp Director & Board Chair |

Using Technology to Teach Social Skills |
|
|
Following the rules of a video game. Sharing an iPad. Collaborating on Minecraft. These are all vehicles we use to teach children who may struggle with social-emotional, communication or behavioral skills at Camp Yakety Yak. We are busy planning the creative, collaborative and technology-based projects kids get to do this summer. Stay tuned! |

Just a few campers is all it took to make me see my passion with working with students with special needs." -- Joy Wilson, Camp Volunteer 2011 |

In the summer of 2011 I received my BS in Liberal Studies from Portland State with no clear direction on what to do next. I thought maybe I would become a teacher but had no idea how I would fit into the teaching world. I decided to volunteer for Camp Yakety Yak to gain some experience working with children. That decision changed my life. I really connected with the campers who had more significant disabilities. Just a few campers is all it took to make me see my passion with working with students with special needs. The director and staff of the camp took me under their wing that summer as well and encouraged me to fulfill my new found career desire. From that short time in the summer of 2011 I was inspired! I went to graduate school and received my MS in Special Education. I am now a special education teacher in a Life Skills Program. I thank Camp Yakety Yak and all the people involved in camp that summer for showing me my true purpose. Camp Yakety Yak changes many lives! - Joy Wilson, former Camp Voluneer 2011 CYY Board of Directors, Secretary, 2012-13 |
