CITY ELECTION ON APRIL 5th
A Vote FOR the CITY EARNINGS TAX is a Vote for Neighborhoods!
Volker neighborhood benefits from the easy accessibility of city staff and a city that makes it possible to address our needs. Please support this important funding source with your vote!
Councilwoman Kathryn Shields urged Volker residents to vote yes on the Earnings Tax at the March VNA meeting. The Earnings Tax is NOT new - it has been around for several decades. It is a 1% tax on the earnings of all residents and non-residents who work in KCMO. It is a fair way for non-residents to do their share in supporting the police, fire and other city services they benefit from everyday when they come to work. It is a good thing for KCMO residents, too, because the entire burden paying for those services would fall on them if weren't for the non-resident earnings tax contributions.
School Board Elections
NATALIE LEWIS introduced herself at the March 10th VNA meeting as a WRITE-IN CANDIDATE for Subdistrict 1 which includes Volker. There is no one on the ballot for Subdistrict 1. A former educator who worked in the school district for 12 years, Lewis decided to run after learning there were three school board seats with no one on the ballot. Lewis has taught at Southeast Middle School and Derrick Thomas Academy. She has held management positions at Sprint and Hallmark and most recently a seven-year assignment at the Kauffman Foundation working with Kansas City public school parents, students and community partners to prepare first-generation college students for college and career readiness.

VOLKER NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING APRIL 14th!
Guest Dennis Mccullock, Director of Public and Government Relations, KU Hospital will be there to update us on construction projects. He is hoping to bring a representative of the landscape architect. PLEASE BE THERE! We need to make it clear how important it is to Volker residents that GREAT LANDSCAPING ON STATE LINE ROAD be included in this project. We didn't get a say in the location of the new hospital towers along State Line, nor in their height. (The tower currently being built will be 11 stories tall.) A PACKED MEETING IN FAVOR OF GREAT LANDSCAPING IS ONE THING WE CAN DO TO IMPROVE THE VIEW FROM VOLKER. We will also advocate for an improved view on the backside of Cambridge South Parking Garage south of 39th Street.
Be ready to CELEBRATE WILLIAM VOLKER'S BIRTHDAY! If you feel so inclined, we'd welcome a William Volker look-alike. Definitely NOT seriously! A stick-on a mustache and a bow tie - you've got it! There might even be some trivia questions about our neighborhood's namesake.
Please join us!
NEIGHBORHOOD GARAGE SALE is April 30th.
DUMPSTER DATES are May 7th and October 1st.
Roanoke Community Center parking lot, 8 am until 11:30 am or until dumpsters are full. Besides trash and yard waste dumpsters, Surplus Exchange will be there to take your electronics, metal, batteries and anything with a plug. A fee is required for CRT monitors and TVs with a tube.
JACOB'S WELL CHURCH DECISION ON CITY CHURCH
After presenting their preliminary plans for an addition to Jacob's Well Church and redesign of the City Church property at the January VNA meeting, and opening up the churches for a neighborhood meeting on February 24th to hear resident input, Jacob's Well has decided to proceed with the addition but not with the demolition of City Church.
