Finals week at SBU

The final exam period can be an intense, stressful period for students. During this time it is common for families to wonder how they can best provide support to their student.

Although it may feel as if there is nothing you can do to help, especially if you are at a distance, there are several ways in which you can be helpful to your student during their exams and that starts from a place of understanding, encouragement, and guidance!

We have provided a list of resources you can point your student to. You may click on the names of each resource for more information.

Success Tips for Families of New students

" You’re providing a real, authentic service as a sounding board and advice dispenser when times get challenging for your student."

Navigating Student Doubt

Often when academic/social responsibilities become too overwhelming for a student to handle, the main resource they may turn to is the comfort of home. Unfortunately it may take some time until you hear about that “A” paper, the new relationship they may have, or the activities they are involved in and excelling at.

Instead, you’re receiving the “nothing-is-going-right-I-hate-this-place” phone calls. Be patient with the negative phone calls made by your student- just remember you’re providing a real, authentic service as a sounding board and advice dispenser when times get challenging for your student.

What can Families Do?

  • Be there! Students will often turn to you, and the family, when times get tough.

  • Encourage your student to also talk about the positive events they are experiencing in their college life.

  • Celebrate victories- big or small. When you hear about that “A” exam send them a “congrats” card. These small tokens of affirmation and support will mean so much to your student.

  • Students may forget to share their thanks, but remember that they are grateful for all you do!

  • Encourage your student to visit the Interfaith Center or the Counseling Center if they need someone to listen.
