When you’re triggered, all of your senses are hyper focused on the thing that you (or some part of you, anyway) thinks is most relevant to your survival. It’s not as if you’re CHOOSING to direct your senses in those moments; your sympathetic nervous system and amygdala have kind of hijacked the bus for a minute.

"WHY SO MANY 'GURUS' TREAT YOU LIKE YOU'RE STUPID."

The job of a true guru, mentor, or guide is to help us shatter those negative self-beliefs by reminding us who we really are and what we’re really all about…and that does not include making us feel worse so we’ll “buy in” to the guru’s approach to begin with...

Maybe you weren’t seen enough growing up. I know, everybody is seen, physically. But I mean really “seen.” Seen as more than just a body taking up space. Seen as more than a needy presence. Seen as more than an inconvenience or a puzzle. Many struggles we have as adults are hooked back into feeling unseen by important people earlier in our lives.

There are a lot of people who assume that, if we acknowledge pain in our lives, or if we are observably affected by past or present “trauma,” that we are somehow “ungrateful.” Let me tell you what nobody told me: you can be both wounded and grateful. The fact that you have things to be grateful for does not mean you’ll never struggle— or that it’s somehow wrong or distasteful to acknowledge you are struggling. Gratitude and pain are not mutually exclusive.

No matter how well Plan A is going — we still need a Plan B. No matter how long it’s been since our last relapse — we still need a safety plan. You’d be amazed at how many smart, resilient people get it in their heads that, after they’ve had some success in therapy or recovery, they don’t need to plan to manage stressors, triggers, and cravings anymore. EVERYBODY has to have a plan to handle stressors, triggers, and cravings.  You need a plan. I need a plan. The most together, emotionally healthy person you know needs a plan.

Hey. You. Relax. I know, I know. We never just “relax” when we’re told to “relax.” But I mean in the bigger picture.

Trauma, abuse, and neglect is damaging enough when it’s inflicted upon us. We don’t have to inflict it on ourselves.
