Changing of the Guard

I am so grateful for the township staff who work so hard to support me in my role as Commissioner and who ensure that Township services are delivered to our residents efficiently and promptly.  Over the last several months, many of our Township department heads have retired after decades of service to the Township.  I want to thank Chief John Livingood, Fire Marshall Ken Clark, Public Works Director Ed Micciolo, Township Engineer Mike Powers and Director of Code Enforcement Larry Mateo for their many years of faithful stewardship of our community.  We will continue to build on the strong foundation that these leaders have laid down for us.

While we are losing a great deal of institutional knowledge, the Township has been prepared for these retirements and has responsibly planned for a seamless transition.  On February 9, Pat Molloy was sworn in as Abington's Police Chief.  I have been impressed by Chief Molloy's dedication to our community and to the police department, and I am confident he will do an excellent job leading our police force.  Ward 12's own Angelo Pontelandolfo will be taking the helm at Public Works after years  as Abington's Superintendent of Highways.  Given Angelo's wealth of experience at Public Works, I know we are in good hands.  Finally, on February 9, the Board appointed Amy Montgomery as the new Township Engineer.  Amy is a certified public engineer and has an extensive resume spanning both the public and private sectors.

This is an exciting time for Aington, and I look forward to working with our new leadership team to find innovative ways to serve the residents of Abington Township.

Support Glenside's Fourth of July Parade

The Fourth of July Parade is one of Glenside's greatest traditions.  The Parade is oragnized by a band of dedicated community volunteers, and it is funded entirely by donations.  The Keep the Parade Running 5k is on April 14 at 8:00 am and is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Parade.

I am organizing a team to run in the 5k.  If you are intersted in joining my team, email me at matt@mattvahey.com.

Abington YMCA Update

As I discussed in my January newsletter, BET Investments has a contract to purchase the Abington YMCA and Baron Rowland Funeral Home.  In its place, the developer would like to build high density age restricted apartments.  BET will be presenting their plans at the Township Planning Commission meeting on February 27 at 7:30 in the Township Board room.  Note that the location may change to accomodate what is expected to be a large turn out.

Abington Police Assisting in Recovery

The Abington Police Department is taking a more proactive role in combating the opioid crisis.  The new program called APAIR will connect any resident battling addiction with a certified recovery specialist.  If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, Abington is here to help.  Contact the police department today.
