Barb Chapman - Town Historian

I am Barbara Chapman, Town of Wheatland Historian. My job is interesting and enjoyable because of the rich heritage of the area and because those who came before me were aware of the value of making and keeping good records of people and events. I am an employee of the town and have an attractive office in the municipal building filled with books, maps, documents and photographs that tell the story of Wheatland.

My husband Cliff and I moved From Chili to Wheatland in 1988 when we found a house that we loved on Quaker Road. We have a daughter JoAnn who lives with her family in Richmond, VA, and a son Dave in Rochester. I retired in 1995 from teaching at Chestnut Ridge School in the Churchville-Chili School District. I had served for a few years as historian for the Town of Chili. I became involved in the education program of the Wheatland Historical Association, writing programs and leading field trip experiences for school groups. Then, with Cliff, I worked on the project restoring the No. 4 Schoolhouse now on the T. J. Conner School campus. After I retired from teaching I also took up quilting which I enjoy very much. I have written or co-authored five books about Wheatland’s history. My latest book "Wheatland and World War I" commemorates the 100th anniversary of that war, it will be available for sale starting on Memorial Day.

Welcome to the Town Historian's Office!

The historian’s office at the Wheatland Municipal Building is a repository of books, manuscripts, documents and public records that are preserved to document the past. Over the years, Wheatland historians have also collected extensive files of family histories, historic maps, photographs, and newspaper clippings that are available for perusal by anyone who is researching a family tree or a topic pertaining to town history.

The historian is charged with interpreting the past through research and writing as well as doing public presentations. Published histories of the town, written by local historians, are available at the office. Displays and talks or tours for groups can be arranged. The historian also encourages the identification and preservation of historic structures. Inquiries about historically significance places in Wheatland are welcomed.

You are welcome to visit the Town Historian during regular office hours from 1 to 3 o’clock on Tuesdays, or any time by appointment. The Town HIstorian can also be reached by phone at (585) 889-1553, ext #112 or send an email to: historian@townofwheatland.org.
